I'd have to say Alliant too. Would be lost without my Unique.....and living without 2400 could be life change too painful to make. I buy my powder off the shelf in one pound boxes. Not much room in my little house to store powder. And around these parts, there is only one truely economical place to buy powder off-the-shelf; a chain store called Bi-Mart. They only stock certain powders. The other stuff would cost a bunch more, as I'd have to pay about $20 a lb in gun stores (unless I could scare up something at a timely Gun Show). And at Bi-Mart, best buys are Alliant powder and Winchester primers.

Can we stop putting up pointless questions like this? What good could possibly come from asking "What 1 powder?" There's tons of options out there. No one will ever be limited to one. It's even more useless than asking "What 1 rifle/caliber would you keep." Who around here would ever be faced with a situation like this. I propose the moderators here exercise some editorial control. Cut these ridiculous timewasting questions. Bonus: save at least 100MB of server space. That's all from me on the subject. This board is an otherwise fantastic resource and I've learned a lot in the short time I've been a member.

Well geez Gonzo, lighten up dude, it's the dead of winter and it's the time of year to discuss things for which there is no definitive answer, nor a real need to find one....I was giggling that this was the first time I had a post get two pages of responses! Since you hate these types of questions, and the question was obvious from the header, why the BLEEP did you waste your precious time reading the post! Lastly, for a guy who has only been a member for 30 days you sure are quick to come out guns a flamin' Mostly folks here are pretty good natured and easygoing--you should do likewise. I've had the best performace out of Hodgdon. HOWEVER - Several AA powders I have been testing are sneaking-up to my Hodgdon results for various calibers in T/C 10" barrels as well as my .45 ACP. I figure a few more tweaks and the AA will reign supreme in a couple of the calibers.

Roger, I think I discovered the wild hair up my ass and had it removed. Things should go more smoothly from here out. I made a comment similar to this on another post, about "which 2 rifles for the rest of your life" or something like that. While i don't see the need for a question like that I do see that there's no need to add my BS to it. So with this I offer my apology. And I'll try to catch those wild hairs before I become an obnoxious little bastard again.

Hodgdon, for no other reason than..I'm a "homer" and Hodgdon's main offices are just down the street from my house! Plus, Varget in my cartridges seems to work fantastic! Tim Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

Gonzo, Thanks. Doesn't really matter that much to me, but I've seen some people get really nasty. The written word is a funny thing sometimes, and it can bring unintnended consequences. Hate to see you get in a pissing match--they're just no fun in the end...and if you get to the point where you're doing biz with folks in the Classified area, it does matter. quote:Hello Dan, I, too, am surprised by the responses here. I have always been a IMR fan but have recently played with Hodgdon powders, primarily due to their Short Cut series for powder measure consistency. I am finding the Hodgdon powders quite satisfactory. BTW, I am just finishing a 25/06 project and will soon be trying your OCW load method to find what this new rifle likes. It is a M700, bedded & trued, with a 27" Lilja HV floatin' above a McMillan A1. Can't wait to pull the trigger and I'll let you know how it goes. As an aside, I found this thread very interesting and pertinent to the forum. Regards,

Thanks, Holmes... I use Hodgdon powders as well, and some Alliant (RL22 and RL15), and Winchester 748, but I usually go for the IMR stuff when I'm in doubt. It performs well for me. Do keep us all posted on the 25-06 progress. That's the next rifle chambering I want to "delve into." Dan

I agree with Gonzo. No offense, but what's the point of a hypothetical question based on a false assumption that is irrelvant at best? Fact is, we all have more than one powder supplier and there is no reason to suggest it will ever be otherwise. The answer is Hogdon, because they now include both Win and IMR. Therefore, Hogdon is the obvious choice but what have we now proven? That the obvious is obviously true? What's being accomplished with all of this agonising over an unrealistic premise?

I won't do it!! I won't pick one powder!! If you try to make me, I'm coming out with both barrels blazing, swinging and kicking!! But, if I wanted to pick one, it would have to be IMR. ______________________________ Well, they really aren't debates... more like horse and pony shows... without the pony... just the whores. 1955, Top tax rate, 92%... unemployment, 4%. Fun! Which is the whole idea of shooting and reloading and hunting and talking to each other in the first place! If one reads carefully between the lines, one finds a heap of useful information! Regards 303Guy
