I need shell holders that will allow a shorter headspace, than normal shellholders will allow. Thank you for any input on this Niels

I believe this can be achieved by merely surface gringing the face a few thou as needed.....how much shorter do you want? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I would think that it would be better to shorten a shellholder than the die. That way one shellholder could work for potentially several different rounds instead of just one that the die is for. Shellholders are also cheaper to replace if you screw up. Redding makes indexed shellholders that are longer but unfortunately not for shorter.......................DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

I have annealed shell holders by heating and letting cool and then machined the flange of the bottom to fit into a Lee Auto prime for a claibre where the shell holder fitted the cartridge better than the Lee offering. If you dont want to or dont have a surface grinder you could do the same, anneal it and face off in a lathe. You could even reharden it after.

Redding makes what is called Competition shellholder set which has 5 shellholders per set in increments of .002". VFW

HI Tom Yes they do, but where do the incremenets start off. ..? Lower/thinner than a normal shellholder or do they start off where a normal shellholder is, so they from there, only get thicker..?

From my understand they start off lower than normal but you might want to get hold of Redding to confirm. I use www.neiljones.com dies this allows you to set the shoulders back by adjusting the die. VFW

If you contact Huntington's, they might make one for you on special order. I know they will custom-build reloading dies. www.huntingtons.com "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Now.....no more excuses!!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Nominal thickness for an industry standard shellholder base to shoulder is .125". The Redding competition shellholders get thicker in increments of .002 up to .010 thicker..................................DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

That is so nice of you, I just cannot accept it. I am lazy enough to buy my way out of some things, but I will never be lazy enough to prey on helpfullness like yours. I drive the freeway most everyday, and by doing that I am beginning to lose faith in the future of mankind. And then something like thos pops up. Good on ya. and goods speed. Now we are at it.... I have a box of once fired 6,5x55 sweedish approxm. 200pcs.and more where that came from. Anyone care to trade for postage on bullets sent to me here in Denmark.?? I will be paying for the bullets my self.

I think I will give the competition shell holders a try.I'll see if I can get my groups even smaller.Anyone tried them, feedback?

Niels, You might check and make sure that you can receive bullets in the mail in Denmark. Last year I tried to ship a knife to a freind in Denmark for some testing and the Danish post office refused it. Supposedly they have some new regulations on what they will allow to be shipped in the mail. I'd check first. Shootaway, I have 2 sets of the Competition shellholders and ended up not using them much. I tend to use my Co-Ax press for most normal loading. It's probably worth doing some test to see if they reduce runout though. I'll post the results if I can get back to the loading bench any time soon.............................DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

djpaintles,I want to try them because I've noticed that in all of my rifles group size was determined by the size of my cases. In some rifles new cases give mediocre groups, and fireformed or partially resized cases give the best groups. In other rifles, new cases give the best groups and fireformed or partially resized cases spray rds all over the target. What I am saying is I believe the best accuracy is found when the cases are sized to an optimum length or headspace.Until now I would control this by changing the brand of cases I was useing or settling for mediocre groups.Niels, you can order them from Sinclair Intl.I ordered a set of six for smaller calibers and another set for larger calibers. They cost $37 a set.

Shoot away.. Thanks. I know Sinclair and have put a good deal of my business here in the past. Good people..Good stuff.. About your headspace thing... New cases or not partially sized or not. I believe that the best groups are made... continously... with brass that is uniform from firing to firing. This uniformity is best achieved with carefull attention to headspace and fl.sizer die. I set my dies up so they bump the shoulder about .002"-.003". Next thing to pay attention to, concerning uniformity is case neck strangle hold on the bullet. I haven't gotten there, yet, my self, but it is probably best to anneal often and to have neckturned the cases. Most of this I read in "Making the target bigger". I personally reload for accuracy and it did my own reloading a lot of good. Best to you all Niels
