Does anyone have any feedback on the following Hodgdon's powders:

Clays
Titegroup
HP38

I am thinking about trying out Hodgdon's but have been having trouble finding load information. Bought their No. 27 Loading Manual today and suprisingly, it seems that there is more load information on other brands of powders (as far as different combinations of size/types of bullets).

Looking to load for .45acp, specifically 230grn Lead RN and also 230grn FMJ RN.

I've used Titegroup for my Bullseye shooting, 3.8 gr under a 185 LSWCHP bullet. This is a low recoil load that needs a 12 lb recoil spring. Titegroup burns clean, but has a louder report than I would expect for such a light load.

Clays is really clean and pretty accurate. I think H 38 is the same balistics as win 231 if I recall.

I've used Clays a lot for 12 gauge target loads. It is arguably the very best powder available --now or ever -- for that application. One of its characteristics is that, in shotgun loads, it is very clean burning.

I load 5.2 grains of hp-38 behind a 230 oregon trail bullet.this is my target load.
I have loaded 3.4 grains of clays behind a 230
I've shot thousands of clays loads with no trouble but oregon trail does not recomend this load.if you want more info on cast loads call Oregon trail bullet company 541-523-4697

Let me be candidly opinionated here . . .

HS-6 is the only powder you need for most handgun loads. It's the "right bulk" for handguns from 9mm/38 Spl, to 44 magnum and beyond.

The magnums get better velocities with H-110, but you can get good loads for them with HS-6. Lots of reloaders use hot powder like Bullseye and Unique. I don't think it's necessary, and I like filling the cases with powder rather than running them half empty.

I shoot IPSC and found this load has given me the best results:

Rainier TCJ 230GR. RN
WSP
4.0GR Clay's (not the universal or international, it's the one that just says Shotgun/Pistol)

This gives me the best groupings with the least amount of recoil. That's my two cents...

I use Hodgdon's Universal Clays for light loads in rifle cases. Burns cleaner than most.

Your post worries me a bit. I just purchased the Hodgdon #27 manual and am hoping for lots of good info. I also just purchased a pound of HP-38. I had been using Clays for the last six years and felt I need to try something else to help my loads. Clays is very clean burning and pretty accurate, but that is why I wnated to try HP-38 and see if it might be a little more accurate. not sure I like the velocitiy figures I'm seeing in published reports. Seem a little slow from a .40S&W.
