I used the Hornady 45. gr. Hornet bullet in Rem. brass, Rem. 7-1/2 primer, and BL-C(2) powder. Don't remember the powder charge but it was about what Hornady listed as maximum in their loading manual. Groups were a little under 1" and it worked well on coyotes and prairie dogs.

I've been loading the 40 gr Nosler "Varmageddon" HP with medium loads of either IMR 4198 or Alliant Reloader10x in a 222 with the standard 1-14 twist and getting good results. I have had better luck getting good groups with bullets lighter than the standard 50 gr. Dunno why.

All I use in my 222 is No’s BT. They’re accurate and effective on coyotes and PDs.

I have an older Sako that loves 40 gr bullets with IMR 4198. Half inch groups fairly often.

I found 40gr V'max was one holers
at 100yds and held up well past
300 on prairie dogs.

I tried 35gr v'max, same out to
about 200 then they scattered
all over the hillside.
This was in Sako Vixen L461 .222mag.
Then rebarreled to .223.

40gr. v-max and a lot more CFE Black than the book calls for with zero pressure. I also use Mag. primers with all ball powder. Smooth metering to +-.05gr.

Don't fret over "twist". Your 1-12" barrel will shoot 40 grainers just as well as any barrel between 1-10" to a 1-16" insofar as twist is concerned -- other factors may degrade accuracy with a particular bullet, but don't blame the twist.

Although I own a number of .222's and use quite a number of 40 grain bullets, I don't happen to be using any 40's in my .222's at the moment. However, I use 40 grain Ballistic Tips, Varmageddons, and V-Maxes more or less interchangeably in the smaller .221 Fireball and larger .223 and .222 Magnum in various rifles with various (and mostly un-measured} twists. The plastic-tipped 40 grainers usually perform with splendid accuracy and their extra velocity typically provides an advantage over heavier bullets at ranges up to 300 yards or a bit more. There are lots of excellent powders you can use with 40's in a .222. I like AA2200 especially well for the .222 class of cartridges, but have recently been using H4198 in the .222 Magnum. RL7, IMR 4198 and any number of others will let your .222 spit the 40's out around 3500 fps without much strain, making it an effective 300 yard gun for the likes of prairie dogs, etc.

I use 40 gr. NOsler bal tips in my L-46 Sako and the work perfect on coyotes and I accidently used one on an antelope and he went down like a lighting strike got him..it was mixed with my 60 gr. Hornady deer bullets I use for culling does in Texas.

A real killer on smaller game is the V-max Hornady 45 gr. HP/Bee #2229..combined with H322 and this bullet its the most accurate combo I can come up with in both of my 222s..Great on rabbits, rock chucks, and even hammered a big coyote with it..

My Rem 700V loves the 40 grain bullets. Vmaxs shoot best but BTs and Sierras are very close behind. H4198, I4198, and RL7 all work well.
