What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

If your loads go into the chamber properly, maybe not.

Does it do the same thing with factory loads?

Most 308 AR's tend to be a little over gassed.

What bullet and powder, and how much powder are you using?

Tony,

Not sure what you mean "over gassed".

These were with spare random reloads I had lying around.

165 grns with around 45-46 grains of varget.

Have not tried factory ammo yet...but will next weekend.

I use SB sizer die for my 308 SCAR, friends tell me I don't need them. I'm switching over to Redding competition dies, not short base.

I've never loaded over 43 grains of any powder in my 308 semi auto. My 308 luvs TAC & 8208XBR. 42 grains TAC with 165 TTSX gets me 2500. 40 grains 8208 with same 165 TTSX gets me 2480-2500. No joke, get an 8 lber of the 8208 when ya see one, you won't regret it.

Mike, that is a fairly warm load with Varget, near max if I remember correctly.

By "over gassed" I mean, most 308 AR's tend to supply more "gas" into their system than is necessary to operate a clean AR 10 type rifle.

I use a little less BreakFree in an AR 10 vs an AR15.

With 165/168gr. bullets try my general puropse 308 load with 39.5 grains of IMR 3031.

With 150gr bullets try 42gr of IMR 3031.

Both of these loads have shot REAL good in the AR10 types I have shot them in.

Last deer season I killed 2 deer and 3 pigs with the 165 Sierra HPBT Gameking and 39.5gr of IMR 3031, with a Christian Arms CA-10 in 308.

Mike, is it pulling the case out of the chamber, and maybe the catching the empty case as it attempts to close on the next round?

Or, is it leaving the case in the chamber, or pulling it out of the chamber, but not ejection it out of the rifle?

If not exactly what is it doing?

Sounds like too high a pressure, and maybe a dirty or under sized chamber.

A buddy of mine had the same problem with his new AR 308, with good quality factory ammo. He sent it back in, and they stated that the chamber was a little tight. After they opened it up a little it worked fine...

I had the same problem with 2 other AR 308's that 2 guys brought to the deer lease.
One would not work with any of the fatory ammo we had, the other would work sometimes with one type.
I have not talked to them to see if their rifles got fixed.

I suspect tight chambers in those rifles and a little over gassing as well as the fired cases showed signs of high pressure.

It seems like many of these 308 AR makers are using tight match chambers [some a little too tight aparently] to enhance accuracy.

What do your primers look like, and how many times had those cases been fired before?

Try my load with once fired cases and IMR 3031.

If you have only Varget try 43gr, 43.5gr, and 44gr. with a 165 gr bullet.

Let us know what happens.

Also if you can find some try 168gr Federal Match, or some 168gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertip factory ammo.

Also clean the chamber real good with solvent and a 44 or 45 cal bore brush.

Then take the extractor out of the bolt and check for brass shavings under it.

Also check the ejector and see if it is going in and out freely.

I always put a drop or two of BreakFree on the plunger and work it in and out every time I clean any rifle with a plunger type ejector, semiauto, bolt or whatever.

If the plunger does not go in and out smoothly it is probably because of brass shavings in the plunger hole. Drop some copper remover bore cleaner on it and let it set for a while. Then see if that loosens it up. If so then flood it with BreakFree. I have seen this happen a lot on Remington 700,s that are shot a lot.

Mike .......

The need for a SB die is extremely rare. Most shooters just need to adjust their FL die height accurately. This just takes a few seconds with the Digital Headspace Gauge. It is calibrated to YOUR particular chamber with one of your fired cases. Then, you just insert your first resized case, and the gauge displays the chamber clearance (at the shoulder) that your handloads have in your chamber.

Then you will know "for sure" how far (and which way) to adjust your sizing die. This gauge also helps to accurately adjust your bullet seating depth.

Huntington tells me all .308 RCBS dies are small base...Must be so as I have used mine it lost of different actions such as Sav. 99, Rem autos and pumps and in Mil. automatic weapons and never a glitch. Most autos are best loaded with small base dies IMO.
