I use a lighter caliber on deer myself and hogs too.

But if you are looking for accuracy with a hunting bullet from a Win Mag, I have a Ruger 77 that loves the following loads.

180Gr Speer Spitzer # 2053
75 grains (I list it at 75.1) Re22
Federal 215 Primers.
Cart OAL: in my rifle 3.310
that's past the standard length for the cartridge. But where it shoots best.
Shoots to recorded avg of .810. That was 14 three shot groups at 100 yeard. And shot into an avg of 1.4 at 200 yards. That was 6 three shot grops.
Speed 2973 fps average for 10 chrony shots.

With a hunting bullet at 165.....it loves the Scirocco. Shots them into .5 and .933 at 100 and 200 respectively with Fed 215s, and 73.0 grains of H4350. OAL: 3.310 This too is long.
Avg FPS: 3107 (2 sets of ten chrony ea.)

I have as of yet, not gotten to a real good loading for a 150. I have tried a few, but about 1.25 is what this rifle is holding to there. I might have just not found the sweet spot for powder and bullet yet. Or maybe the rifle doesn't like the light bullets at all. At any rate the 165 should work well on deer, if your rifle doesn't find a 150 it likes.

Oh yes, the 165 Hornady Interlock SP also shoots damn near those identical stats as the Scirocco. That load was H4350 @ 73.8 grains and Fed 215s again. Oal 3.275
avg FPS 10 total chrony: 3128

Good luck, I hope these shoot well in your firearm. They aren't super charged loads, but they were accurate with hunting bullets. They all got very close to the speeds published by the Powder catalogs I checked.

Bullet Hornady BTSP 165gr.

I have taken Hogs up to 450lbs. and Elk out to 300yds. and Pronghorns out to 475yds.

Start with about 74 grains of IMR 7828 behind your Nosler 180's. Use the non-magnum primers for the best chance at good accuracy. Work up as pressure signs and accuracy indicate. You won't need anything else in your .300 unless you just insist on having a 150 grain deer load, in which case the H4831 behind the Noslers will do the trick. Don't expect to duplicate anyone's pet load, because each rifle is a rule unto itself.

I've never had any experience with the Barnes on game because I could never get any to shoot accurately enough to hunt with, but I suspect they are to "tough" to give quick kills on black bear. Don't know anything about the Scirocco. There may be bullets "as good as" the Nosler Partitions, but there are none better for the game you intend to hunt.

I have tried the lighter bullets in all of my 300s but have come to the conclusion that I don't really need anything under 180grs for most hunting I do with the 300mag. In fact, I use more 200gr Noslers these days than the 180s!
I prefer R-22 and standard primers in all of my loads, except I have one new load using R-25 that is a real hummer!

Deeer John, Oh how I hate to write, but didn't you recently post that you have never seen any need to go to the 180 in the 300's...I think I gotcha!! but I'm reasonably sure you can slip out of this one...or did you take my advise, in which case I will feel poorly for chastising you so severly!

Correction, that was "go to the 200 gr. Noslers" as you were a 180 fan./.

My 300 win likes 79 gr of H4831 and 150 nos partitions in ww brass and fed 215 primers, in the 1/2 moa neiborhood with a 5 shots. In 165 grains I like sierra HPBT gamekings with 76 grains of IMR4831 same brass and primers. For Elk its either 180 sbt sierra gamekings or 180 partitions with 75-76 grains or reloader 22. I do shoot a lot of lighter plinking loads with H4350, and R19. I have gotten around a minute with 180 grain partions and H1000. I picked up some Hornady 190 spbt but have not worked up a load yet. The only bullets I've had problems with where the 180 gr Xbt's, but I have a 1 in 11 twist barrel which might explain that. Good Luck. Mike

For the 180gr. Scirocco (Swift) bullets (which work exceptionally well on elk BTW), I'd recommend 81.5 gr. H1000 with Fed 215 primers.

The other Scirocco load I'd try would be with 4150. I don't have my load book handy but I used that one last year with great success.

RL-22 and the scirocco did not work in my rifle as well as it did with Nosler partitions or ballistic tips (also CT Partition Gold bullets).

FWIW,
Rick

A lot of shooters seem to use 75gr of r-22 w/ 180's. I also am one of these people. Not copying, it's just the load is the most accurate. As you work up a load I bet it will be somewhere close.
