7MM-08 AI Test
Took my son's Savage 7MM-08 AI out for a test drive yesterday. I tested three powders, MRP, Hunter and DP 86 with 160gr Nosler Partitions. Here are some numbers.

Hunter.
48gr---2705fps
48.5gr-2724
49gr---2766
49.5gr-2797
50gr---2820
50.5gr-2850
51gr---2884
51.5gr-2893
52gr---2894

MRP
47gr---2626
47.5gr-2722
48gr-error
48.5gr-error
49gr-error
49.5gr-error
Replace battery
50gr---2704
50.5gr-2744
51gr---2781
51.5gr-2803
52gr---2833

DP-86
47gr---2667
47.5gr-2710
48gr---2742
48.5gr-2746
49gr---2781
49.5gr-2833
50gr---2843
50.5gr-2869
51gr---2888
51.5gr-2910

This DP-86 powder/bullet combo was pretty accurate as the group from this 47-51.5gr spread was just over 2 inches.

Where did you get the load data? Any particular manual?

Not a lot of data out there. I just started at the max charge for the parrent 7mm-08 and worked up. DP-86 is a surplus powder from Accurate and they recommend using 3100 data.

Yeah, I was in the same boat working up a load for my 7x57 and Hunter. I used 7-08 data and worked up from there. Stopped at 2650fps only because it matched my .375 (*so I wouldn't have to worry about two different trajectories).

What bbl length on the Savage?

Robert

A couple of us use a lot of DP 86 and find that it is very close in performance to Hunter. Your data seems to bare this out. I'm surprised at your achievement. Confused How far out were you seating the bullets? fishingroger

Pretty good, I can only get about 2850fps max in my 23"bbl 280.

I'm a little suprised at my velocities as well. I'm gunna load some more Hunter and DP-86 and retest along side a known velocity load.

You're probably not pushing the pressures Steve is.

hornady factory 7x64, 162gr sp, goes over 2850 in my 7x64 ... though i wouldn't shoot 160gr in a 708 .. 138 SPBT or 120gr tsx

I'm sure, but I am running right at the top end, and he is only using a 22"bbl. Eeker

Update.

I did some investigating on my Chrony F1. Found that the homemade solid white sky screens gave me false readings.
Replaced them with some opaque white and everything is more better. Or is it more gooder?
Anyhow, long story short all of the Chrony data I originally posted was inflated. Drop all those readings by about 80-100fps.
