In the new Speer Catolog, I see that they are now marketing the "Federal" Deep Shok bullet as a componant item.

That is wonderful news, as I used eh Deep Shok when loaded by Federal, and they really worked well.

Noticed that the list price for a box of
180 gr 30 cal is $19.00+/- for 100 bullets, not a little box of 25 or 50. Heck of a deal.

That is only a few dollars a box more than a normal Speer Hot Cores, but with a lot better jacket construction.

That's great news! I always wondered what happened to these bullets. I had heard that the bullet manufacturers that supplied Federal's Premium line were slightly miffed about a "cheap" bullet that could out-Partition a Partition, etc. So, Federal/Blount quietly pulled them.

Again, great news.

I just found out today when briefed by the warhead reps that Alliant Techsystems has acquired the Blount ammunitions business. That means that Alliant now holds Hercules Powder, Federal Cartridge, Speer / CCI, Trophy Bonded and all the military small arms production at Lake City.

Yes, that is quite true. We were at a press meeting at the Shot Show, where they "announced" it and had the new President give a,"we are going to do", speech.

ATK will look at every division and every department in a year. Nothing is sacred.

In "God we trust, all others bring DATA".

If it pays it stays. Very typical corporate meeting.

Terry,
Tell us more about the terminal performance of these bullets.
How did they compare to, say Remington Core-locks, Hornady interlocks??

The Deep Shok has a VERY pronounced jacket taper.
Very thin nose, and very thick middle & base.

Core is Locked in and is a Hot Core.

Also it has 5 scallops in the nose for uniform expansion.

It is tougher than either the Core Lokt or Hornady. They must hold together well, as we never recovered any bullets.

They are the next best thing to a TBBC. Far better than a Speer common Hot Core and I would use them over the Grand Slam too.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Hornadys, but the Deep Shok is tougher. Use it if you need it.

This is great news. The Deep Shock always looked to me to be a great bullet. There may be a horse race between the Hornady SST and the Deep Shock.

The bad news is that some useful bullets that don't sell particularly well may be axed. The smaller caliber Mag-Tips, for instance.

By the way, I think Alliant runs the Radford Army Ammo plant in Radford, Virginia, along with all the other things harald mentioned.

Big Iron, there's really not much to compare between the SST and Deep-Shok... the Deep-Shok is a vastly superior bullet. In my tinkering (shooting targets and into sand at just over 2,600 fps) they retained 79% of their weight and were in text-book mushroom form... the SST wouldn't have fared nearly so well. I've sectioned one... they have a massive "hour-glass" shaped jacket that mechanically locks the core in place. After my humble trials (only time and field experience will REALLY tell) I'd still be willing to rank the Deep-Shok's right up there with Nosler Partition's. Terry's experience certainly lends some credence to my notion.

The Speer website is currently outdated, still being a legacy from Blount.

I've been waiting for the damn things for a while now. I read about them a while back and couldn't find anyone who is carrying them. I checked Graf & Sons, Midway, and Lock, Stock, & Barrel. Thanks for the MidSouth link.

I WANT this bullet in 7mm, .375, and .416!!! I, too, think it would be better than the Grand Slam and Mag-Tip (but I'm still a big fan of the Mag-Tip, especially in my .416 Remington Magnum).
