Hi:

I have the opportunity to buy Large Rifle standard primers for use with my .243 Win. and light loads in the 7mm. RMag.

How would you compare from your experience the following 2 primers in terms of accuracy and performance and which type would you buy?

Remington 9 1/2 Large Rifle primers (or)
Federal 210 Large Rifle primers.

I use Nosler ABs and Partitions and Sierra GK typically with IMR4350, BD and RL22 in both rifles.

Thanks, Wayne

i've heard of good results with both. most people seem to prefer federal, but i use CCI, so i am not to judge too much, i suppose.

i use the lee auto-prime whcih recommends that federals not be used due to their more volatile nature. lee stresses that this doesn't mean federals are any better or worse, just more volatile with their hand tool because of the priming compound used - hence, my use of CCIs.

FEDERAL 210!!!!!!!

However, today with the extreme shortage of primers take what you can get.

I use Federal 210M primers in my 7mm Rem. Mag. (and they aren't light loads) and WLR primers in my 243 Win.

I would go with the Federal 210 primers. In my experience, the Remington primers are a bit cooler and thus take a bit more powder to reach an equivalent load worked up with Federal, Winchester or CCI primers.

Aerostarp,

I have used both these primers (210 and 9 1/2) in the 7mm Mag before and they worked just fine. The Federal 210 is a hotter primer than the Remington 9 1/2 and may work better in the big 7mm. You won’t know until you try it. I wouldn’t be afraid of working up a load with either one.

For me ...... I would buy both. Then experiment with both and both powders to find the best combo.

I thought I was the only guy doing that, using Fed 210's for a 7mm Mag. 63.5 grains of H-4831SC and 150 grain Nosler Partitions shoot 3 shots into a 1/2" group at 100, several times too, not just a one time proposition. I don't really need Mag primers when a rifle shoots like that.

Thanks for the responses guys. Seems like Fed. 210 gets the nod around here.

I appreciate all the replies.

The brass colored unplated Rem. primers fit loose in some of my cases.

They measure smaller in diameter than other brands.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

You know, many people go right to the Fed. because others tell them they are the best. I have run pretty comprehensive testing w/ my 260ai & 5 diff. primers. The RP 9 1/2 rivals the Fed. 210M primers for accuracy w/ most loads. In my 338-06, CCIBR are sginificantly more accurate than Fed. 210M. It's best to buy 100 of each & try them yourself before laying in 1000.

Yup, I’ve done my own testing over the years and I get similar results with a number of different cartridges.
