Ammomaster press, problem?

Guys,

I just bought an RCBS Ammomaster press 'cause my Forester Coax is a little short for 500 NE. It works, but doesn't have a lot of extra room when seating the 570 Gr. bullets. And of course one can never have too many toys ;-)

The question I have is have you noticed that the ram is "jerky" and not smooth when running the ram up? The one I got feels like it is binding or the ram is bent or out of round in spots. Did I get a bad one? This is brand new and has plenty of factory lubrication, but just in case I tried adding some Breakfree and it didn't seem to help any.

I am planning on calling RCBS and see what they have to say but figured I'd ask here first to find out if this is kinda normal for this press.

Thanks in advance for your time ;-)

You might what to check the bearing and nylon bushing on the die holding plate on top. Also look at the ball bearing that is under neath the shell plate. If powder or for that mater any foreign objects gets underneath there it can cause drag that may be your problem. Is this a newer model with aps primmer feed our the older stlye with the tube feed primmer?

If its new try a little oil on the ram...I have not had any trouble with mine at all and its runs as smooth as silk, I have a world of room, I mean it was made for the 50 caliber Browning Machine Gun round, a 500 shouldn't even come close to causing problems...I load .470s, 416s, 404s in mine and loaded a lot of 505s last year for a PH friend of mine.

It will glitch if primers fill up the hole in the ram, keep them blown out of there...

Dennis,

Thanks for the "reply", but this press is a simple (but beefy) single stage. The web page is

Roi,

I've got the AmmoMaster single stage press also. It's very smooth for me. I suspect there may be a problem with yours but I have no ideas as to what it could be.

I am surprised that you say that the press doesn't have much room for your .500 NE loading. Mine swallows up .470 NE rounds. Like Ray said, it was designed for the .50 BMG so 3" to 3.5" Nitro rounds shouldn't be a problem. Could you be screwing the dies too far down in the press? Just a thought.

Ray and Bob,

It's my Coax that is a little short on room, that's the reason I bought the Ammomaster So as it turns out it's just my press that has problem. Thanks for getting back to me, now RCBS will have a chance to prove to me that their return/repair policy is still one of the best...

Roi,

Now that I reread your original post, I see where it was your Forester Coax that was short on room for the big rounds. My goof.

I have been very happy with my AmmoMaster. There must be something wrong with yours but, for the life of me, I can't imagine what it could be. I'd bet that RCBS will make it right, though. Let us know how it turns out.
