setters5Monopoly
Is Hodgdon a monopoly? As far as I know, they own all the North American manufacturers of powder, plus some overseas manufacturers.
27 January 2023, 00:48
rcraigIt's starting to look that way. I think they are more into the money business rather than the powder business. And right now it's not a buyers market. I don't see a change anytime soon.

F. GuffeyI do not know, back in the mid 60's one of my older brothers called Hodgdon about a problem he had. His Model 70 Winchester 270 was shooting 10 foot high and the bolt had to be hammered open.
Bruce Hodgdon was setting in front of our house the next morning.

eagle27Many of the Hodgdon powders, as per the list below, are made in Australia by ADI manufacturing owned by Thales Australia Limited, so Hodgdon don't actually have a monopoly particularly for their own branded powders.

bpesteveI believe Alliant (once Hercules) is still separate from Hodgdon. Lots of old time powders still being made there like Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique, 2400; and all the ReLoader powders: 7, 10x, and 15 on up.
27 January 2023, 03:07
richjI think a few of those RL powders are imported.
Made in Switzerland by Nitrochemie
RL-17, 33 maybe more
27 January 2023, 05:05
WstrnhuntrI would like to know where all of the Alliant powder is going.
Hell, I can even find Vitavouri on the local shelves now, but still not even a sniff of anything Reloader. I used to live right down the road from the old Hercules plant where some of it is/was made. But it is nowhere to be found. Sometimes I wonder if the Government is just paying these manufacturers WAY too much for their product for them to give a damn about selling to the rest of us.

Lamarhodgdon doesn't own any powder making anything.
they are just the handlers.
powder is made in Canada, Australia, the U.S, Sweden, and other countries.
oh.
Alliant powder just hit the usual suspects shelves earlier today.
I was looking at several RL rifle powders, green/red-dot, etc.
brace yourself for the price increase.

cal30 1906Good lord.
I just today paid 40.00 for H110 and 47.00 for a pound of 2400.
I paid it but damn it is frustrating as hell. I keep a minimum of 2 pounds of my favorite pistol powders. A friend of mine in the industry says to expect it to stay like this for an year at least.

Yeah, it will stay like this for a year at least. Then it will go up. It sure as shit won't be going back down. The "industry" is good at bullshitting.

18 eggs are $8 here... insanity....

sambarman338Components apart from ADI powders are hard to find here, too, and stuff like cheese can go up 33% overnight. It is mostly to do with logistics when covid cuts your workforce but the war in Ukraine is putting up gas prices bigtime - and we are a major gas producer.
Because even our Labor government pays credence to market forces, it is letting this stuff happen to a large extent.
I imagine some of the squeeze on reloading stuff could be to do with the war, too, but what are we to do, let Putin reconstruct the Soviet Union?

That's the truth! My IRA has gone up over 30% since Biden was elected. And on top of that they just increased my Social Security check. My property has all increased in value and the value of my guns is through the roof. I can't stand much more of this!

RL-17 for sure. It is sold also as Eicho 17 or Reload Swiss 60.
RL-15 is the same as Norma 203B for example (Maybe, Norma 203B has tighter tolerances). But the same powder. It is also maybe the same as Bofors RP3 and RWS R903.
RL-19 is Norma 204, maybe Bofors RP4 and RWS R904.
RL-22 is Norma MRP, maybe Bofors RP5 and RWS R905
This is what I know. So it looks like 15, 19 and 22 at least are made by Norma or someone else in Europe, 17 is made by Swiss Nitrochemie and sold as Reload Swiss RS60 here.

You and me both. Almost all my rifles love Alliant and can't find it anywhere. Since I have a FFL I have signed up to be notified when distributors get it and not a peep for last 6 months. If people are getting it its old stock from some wharehouse. I have emailed Alliant and get the runaround about it. Luckily the Hogdon powders I use I have been able to find with patience.

A LOT of it is going to South Africa, as I saw racks full of Reloader powders there.

ZekeShikarI just want some more Reloder 26 and 33 please!!!!
I just paid an outrageous amount for an 8 pound keg of Vihtavuori N570 but my 26N absolutely sings with that stuff so I'm set with that for awhile.

All that and more probably. The powder companies will do nothing that might reduce the price of their product.

LamarI'm still trying to figure out how they [hodgdon] are running 24/7 with overtime and hiring new employees.
meanwhile back on the home front...LOL
production has not been increased.
