I recently gave my Remington ADL .223 to one of my sons who is headed back East to go to medical school. That provided the perfect reason (are reasons really needed) to buy a new Remington SPS Varmint in .223. I was loading up a lot of .223's with my load for the ADL and went out to sight in the SPS using new brass. As what sometimes happens the battery on the chronograph was dead so no velocity readings were taken. I noticed that the bolt lift on the ADL load when shot in the SPS was getting into the stiff area and didn't complete the sighting in process. I went back home and loaded up some new loads for the SPS with one grain less powder and went back out last nite to check the speed and confirm/finish the sighting in process. The 40 gr. Ballistic tips were at 3922 fps and the sight in was complete with some good groups around .5-.8. We had turned the trigger down and floated out the barrel by removing some of the stock pressure points and everything was working swell. Here's was was interesting. The ADL loads with a 24" tube and one grain more of RL-7 was almost the same speed at 3925 fps. The SPS with on grain less and a 26" tube was at the 3922 fps. Just a lesson in barrel length and chamber size relearned.

I've personaly seen a 25" 30-06 with a tight chamber run 250fps faster than 26" 30-06 with a slop hole chamber and the exact same lot of ammo.
(in fact it was even in the same barrel, after we cut a inch off the breach end and re-chambered)
