I cant understand why people do this. If 270 mag velocities are what you "wanted" or "felt you should get" then why didnt you get one.

A bit like the fellows who owns a 280 Rem and think it's a 7mm mag, or a 3006 that is a 300 mag. It just ain't gonna happend.

Man, those are some hot loads. Most people I know have a hard time breaking 3000 with 130 grain bullets in a 22" barreled gun. I'd go to something more powerful if I needed that kind of ballistics.

You don't know any experienced .270 reloaders then!!! 3100 is so easy with a 22" anybody can do it!!!

I'm not going to comment on the load cited in this thread, after all what do I know about this man's rifle - or risk acceptance level, for that matter. I will point out, though, that I have seen several gun writers (Siefried and Simpson) publishing what they maintained were safe loads at 3000+ fps with a 150 grs NP in a 22" barrel .270 Win with (I believe) 58 grs of RL22.

I have shot that load for quite a few years now. Alas, my trust in loading data in general - and gun writers in particular - suffered badly when I chronoed the load to below 2900 fps in my gun. Rats, and here I thought I was zooming along at 3000... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

I shoot 58.5grs of RL-22 with a Nosler 150gr BT, it does over 3000fps in my 24" gun, and cases last a long time!

Africa was basically conquered with the 6.5x54, 7 and 8MM Mauser and 303 British. Why push an individual cartridge to the edge and beyond, risking rifle and shooter, when its so easy to just trade for a bigger gun? You want one anyway!

I have owned and loaded for several .270s since 1968; at present I have a pair of Pre-64 FWTs so chambered and here are my loads for them. These have been extensively tested in very hot weather and have extracted w/o any boltlift stiffness.

Rifle # 1. Win. brass, Fed. 215 Primer, Nosler 150 PT, RE-22-60 grs.---velocity in 22" factory tube-2910fps. good groups-barrel a bit worn.

Rifle # 2. Fed. nickel brass, CCI 250 Primer, Nosler 150 PT, RE-22-58.5 grs.---velocity in 22" factory tube-2905fps. superb groups from minty rifle.

I worked up to these and have been shooting them for years w/o problems; this type of load gets everything out of JOC's pet round that it has to give-and it is just as good as he told us it was!

I have owned, loaded for and shot almost 100 big game rifles, I am not a "hotrodder" and I know other people who get 3000fps from similar loads-in 22" bbls.; it is quite simple in 24".
