Powder and primer shipping.

I was just looking though my last Lock, Stock, & Barrel catalog, and noticed that they state they'll only ship powder and primers by UPS and Fedex to commercial addresses. Have any of you had any problems getting powder and primers shiped to your home address? Is this something new? Or just for large oreders?

Where do you all buy your powder and primers from?

Unless you can combine orders with a few buddies, you're really better off making the purchase at your local dealer.

The hazmat is now $20 per package, and powder and primers must be shipped separately.

Phil, I just looked on natchez shooters supply's site to see if they had changed thier haz shipping policy. It's still the same.
There was a post recently you may find interesting. I posted natchez's haz policy.

Most suppliers will ship powder and primers combined up to 70 pounds gross weight or 50 pounds net weight on one HazMat fee.

Some suppliers will not mix, and in addition will not ship partial cases.

Gentlemen,
You can ship primers and powder by air. Most shippers are ignorant of this. I went to some manufacturing companies to get the correct HAZ-MAT designations for both powder and primers. I then called UPSs' HAZ-MAT line and was told UPS will ship both by air. I then called Natchez Shooters Supply and spoke to the owner. He contacted UPS and verified what I had told him (it helped immensely having written down the names of the supervisors I spoke to) He has since changed his policy and if you call you can have them send you primers by air. He may not have changed the policy on the website yet.

Went and made my purchase from Natchez yesterday. Eight 1-pound cans of powder, and 3-5,000 cartons of primers. Can't in my wildest dreams imagin how it exceded 25 lbs., but recieved an e-mail today that I was going to be charged 2-$20 Hazmat fees, said the shipping weight was 38 lbs. Just curious, but what do they ship this stuff in. Think I probably bought a 20 lb wood box too.

Going to try some loads for the 450 Marlin, 375 H&H, and 300 Weatherby. The primers should last quite a while. Got a case each of Fed 210 & 215, and one of WLR. Then for powder H4198 & H322 for the 450 Marlin, H4895 & H414 for the 375 H&H, and going to try some H4831SC, H1000, and H4350 for the 300 Weatherby. Haven't made up my mind on the bullets yet, other that I have 500 350gr. Kodiaks for the Marlin.

Just currious, but what quanities do you guys usually purchase in when you order powder and primers. Natchez had some great prices, but it's going to cost approx. $50 for shipping.

I can see where re-loading is a hobbie, and not an institute for saving money.

Sounds as if they've found a way to increase their profit margin. I ordered three eight-pound kegs of powder and 10,000 primers from Powder Valley last month. One HAZMAT fee and approximately $13 shipping for one container. Don't remember the weight.

Greyghost,

That just sounds like an error. I would call Natchez ASAP.

Good Luck,

Bob

Ditto on what Bob said.
I've made orders from them in the neighborhood of what you made and was only hit for 1 haz fee. Tell em to take out that surplus #12 shot they used instead of the foam peanuts.
If it's going to cost you 2 fees tell them you want to make it 50 lbs.(Lets see, I need 12 lbs R-22, ahhhhhh [Big Grin] )
Good luck

Already talked to them on the phone, right off! Their policy is powder and primers can be shiped together in one container up to 25 lbs. And they stated that shipping weight on mine came to 38 lbs. Told them to go ahead, but I would weigh it just as soon as it came. As I said it sounds like I bought a heavy box too. Both Natchez, and Lock, Stock, & Barrel said shipping requirements change almost daily. I don't know. Just sounds strange.

I would find other sources!

My last order was for 10,000 primers and 16 pounds of powder. One box, one HazMat fee.

The order before that was for 20,000 primers, 32 pounds of powder. One box, one HazMat fee.

I used to do business with Natchez and Spartan (many years ago) until I found them fairly deceptive, and one of the most expensive suppliers around.
