Being very bored and also having the ability to remember a lot of what I read, I thought I had noticed that the velocities in the Barnes #4 Manual were consistently lower than in the Barnes 3 Manual. One of the reasons this came to my attention is I had always got the feeling, that the Barnes #3 Manual when compared to others always had slightly heavier powder charges and slightly greater velocities. Additionally, before the Barnes # 4 Manual came out, Barnes's response for TSX load data was "work up using X bullet loads, but you are likely to be able to load 1 or 2 grains more because of the grooves in the TSX that reduce pressure". Given the above, I was expecting the Barnes # 4 Manual to show consistently heavier loads and higher velocities. I picked 4 representative cartridges and compared powders and velocities. What I found was not consistently heavier loads but I did find consistently lower velocities. Now granted the comparison is X bullet to TSX, but again my understanding was that the TSX grooves were supposed to help increase velocity because of reducing peak pressures. Interesting. The TTSX bullets look like they may be a very accurate load in my 300wsm. However they are longer than I like. They are longer and slower than the Nosler Accu Bond with the same powder charge.

Only way to know that for sure is to chronograph them....but Mike it sure looks like the Lawyers had a field day with the new manual.

An Sniper, I dunno...I called Barnes regarding some loads that I thought were dangerously hot in Manual number 4 and I got a very disinterested response. So who knows... I was wondering the same thing. I concluded that when they reached factory ammunition velocity they stooped load development.

I think this is more a commentary on Barnes No. 3 than anything. The majority of the velocities in No. 3 were higher to a good bit higher than No. 4 though I have found some in No. 4 that are higher. My speculation is that their testing simply got better and more thorough and the blue sky left. LWD

For example, I have been using a max load of RL19 under the 168 TSX in my .30-06. In both manuals, that's 60 grains. However, the stated velocity drops from 2980 fps in No. 3 to a likely much more realistic 2859 fps in No. 4. LWD

like you say the testing got better or more relastic and closer to my velocities out of a remington. Wonder if they got one of those new blue chronys?

I am inlcined to be in the same camp as LWD...maybe they changed pressure testing methods...decided to be a little more conservative etc... Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi?
