I have a pound of each old and new Alliant/Hercules 2400. Has anyone used this powder in a 38 special? What loads and bullet weights? Would the charge weights be the same for each old/new? Your help is appreciated.

How old is old? powder stored correctly will last many years. I shoot a +p.38 load in my model 27 Hiway patrolman that shoots pretty good. I have loaded it with powder that was purchased in the 1980-s and with some that was purchased in 2005.I found no difference in how it shot.I prefer it in the .357 mag but here is a good .38 load. 125 grain Rainier plated hollow point 10.5 grains of H-2400 CCI#550 primer The book I was loading from listed 900 fps I have not run it thru my chronograph. So it could be give or take a little. I like the Winchester 231 in the .38 loads. If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Devoted member of Newmont mining company Underground Mine rescue team. 2400 just isn't a good powder for 38 - its to slow and to dirty. Try some faster like unique. My altime favorite load is 6.5 gr unique and a 125 JHP and going to the dump to shoot rats.

I found it to be too slow too. Was using 158 gr. cast bullets. Got inconsistent results and gobs of unburnt powder.
