7mm mag--what would you load?

I'm going up to AK on a carribou hunt. My friend in Anchorage is going to loan a Ruger 7mm mag to another friend on the same hunt and I want to load a box of premium bullets to take up there for the 7 mag. We will go to the range when we get there.
I have on hand 160 partitions and 140 tsx's. I'm thinking either the 160's with 70 grain of H1000 or the 140's with 69 of either re22 or i7828.
Given these two bullets--the tsx 140 or the 160 partition anyone else have a favorite load.
Thanks--Kraky

My 7mm loves 160gr. Partitions in front of 80gr.of H-870 and Fed. 215 primers. I get 3100fps chronographed. What more could you want. I used to jump around from bullet weight to bullet weight, but now I try to keep it simple and have only one load. This is IT. I think the 160 grainers are the way to go. I also like the 175 too.

I like the Nosler 175 gr Partition.Around 68 gr of Retumbo chrono's 2950 and is very accurate in my rifle.
H1000 was one of the best for 160 gr Part. I found.

My old Parker Hale 7mm just loves 70 grs IMR 7828 and 160 gr Speer BT's or 160 gr Partions. shoots both bullets to the same point of impact. There is very little a 160 gr partion started off @ around 3100 fps can't handle.

My 7mm get excellant 3-shot groups@ 100 yards with both of these loads. Good -Shooting

175 grain Nosler Partition
CCI-250 primers
66.0 grains of IMR-7828
Muzzle Velocity 3055 fps

162 grain Hornaday SP
Fed 215 primer
79.5 grains H-870
Never tested velocity, however, will put five shot in the same hole at 100 yards.

You got about all you need. Those should do it and pick the one that gives you good groups.

I didn't make myself clear enough. These are the only "tough" 7mm bullets I have on hand.
(140 tsx and 160 par)I do have just about every applicable Re, imr, hodgdon powder on hand. This is just an accuracy guess--I have to load them in Wisconsin and take them to Alaska hoping I hit the "magic load" for his Ruger. Can anyone make a "best guess" which load for those two bullets??

For us to predict which will be more accurate in your rifle would be nothing more than a guess.I have found the tsx bullets to be much more accurate than partitions in my own rifles but all rifles are different.I have had the best results in my own 7mmremmags with r-22 behind 140gr bullets.

In that situation I'd spend for a machined bullet.....either North Forks. A-Frames or TBBC.

My personal luck with A-Frames is excellent.....

Stubblejumper--I've been around reloading a long time and realize "its a guess". I crossreferenced some manuals and info I had saved and came up with those potential loads as "possibly" being good ones...that's why I was hoping for a couple of "guess helpers"...your belief in the tsx and re22 certainly has me thinking. Thats the kind of info I was hoping for.

Vapodog--the only 2 bullets I have on hand to work with are the 140 tsx and the 160 par.

Then load some of both.....check for accuracy when you get to Alaska. Cases aren't hard to find I suspect.

I didn't know this was going to get so complicated. He has some ammo up there that is probably store bought that most likely shoots as good as this friend can shoot. I just wanted to make a nice gesture and take some ammo along that "might" shoot great at the range and be an alternative. I don't have a 7mm mag anymore but do have the dies, some bullets and 22 cases sitting here. I think the tsx's would be a great choice but think I'm gonna load all of them up with the 70 grains H1000 and 160 par...it seems to have some good reports and followers in some info I have here. I thank all who responded. We can call it quits on this thread. Thanks again.

If I had to guess which powder would be the most accurate it would be R22 w/ both the 140s and 160s.

Since you will not have a chance to test the loads I wouldn't apt for a Max load IMO.

64-65 grns of R22 under those 160s would be my best guess. I load 66-67 of R22 under them but, it's max by the data I have.

67 grns of R22 would be a good load w/ those XXXs.

R22 is a Hard powder to beat in the 7RM.

Good Luck!

160's are always excellent in the 7 Mag., but caribou don't really need anything heavier than a 140. Flat trajectory is of utmost importance when after caribou, since many shots are at long range. I use 71.5 grains of OLD SURPLUS H4831 with 140-grain Nosler Partitions in my Ruger 1B 7mm Rem. in Rem. cases with Fed. 210 primers. V is 3350 FPS measured at 10' from the muzzle.

The only caribou I ever shot was taken at about 425 yards in the middle forks of the Gulkana River basin. Used a .308 Norma with 150-grain bullets - Sierras! This was the longest shot I ever took at any game, and I had a solid rest!

Don, 154 Interbond over a load of H4831, 64grs. seems like a good number. Jay
