gents: how would you load a 9.3x62 fornm desert oryx?

Well, I have never been oryx hunting, but I would go after one with my 250-gr Barnes TSX/RL-15 handloads, I would think that would do nicely for one, provided, of course, that shot placement is good. It's what I hope to take to Africa for plains game in the next few years.

Yes, that is probably the most sensible compromise between trajectory and penetration in the 9.3x62. I shot a waterbuck with this load at 300 yds. Only thing I was unhappy about: too many .366 cal 250 grs TSX recovered. Perfectly expanded, but very few produced an exit wound. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... Not MMM, but here are some load suggestions from John Barsness. The RL15 max load worked well for me with the 250 grs TSX. I get just under 2600 fps out of a 22" barrel with this load. In practical ballistic terms, this equates to .30-06 180 grs factory loads. As usual, stay safe and work up from below.

Very seldom does it get more obvious than that. KB ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

I like oryx in .308 for, moose, boar and roe, but it has bad ballistics for desserts. Accubond or partition may fit better.

jsl, I will give you the data from my manual for RL-15, it says a starting charge of 52.5 grains with max of 56.0 grains (and please have someone double-check me on this). My load is 55.8 grains, will shoot 2.5" at 200 yds from my CZ 550 FS. I don't have a chronograph so I don't know what the velocity is. I have knocked several 300+-lb wild hogs right off their feet with it. Recovered two of the bullets, both had gone through the shoulder and hit the spine. There are those on various forums who will push the max limit from the manual, they say go on and do it it's OK, but I'm too chicken to try it. This works for me. Good shooting, MMM.

My CZ shoots Hornady 286's with RL really well, but if I was going to hunt Oryx I would have to use Norma Oryx bullets.

In my 9.3x62 I'm shooting Ramshot Big Game powder, Graf brass, CCI or WW primers and 285 PRVI's, 286 Norma's and 270 grain Speers. No game animals taken with it but from digging them out of wet sand I'm guessing they'd kill an Oryx without any difficulty, I would not hesitate to hunt elk with any of the above. Mine is a short 20" barreled Mauser and I get 2350 fps out of the heavy ones. If I were fairly certain to take a 300 yard shot I'd make sure I practice a bunch at that range + a bit so you know exactly what your holdover is and not just what the chart says. I'd be tempted to use a bullet a bit lighter too to flatten out the trajectory I can't imagine that an Oryx is going to suck up a 232, 235, 250 or 270 grain bullet in the lungs and make off with it. Just my opinion others may vary good luck on your Oryx hunt.!

I agree 10% with this. I use Varget (ADI 2208) & 250 GR TSX FOR 2580 FPS and good accuracy of clover leaf. See Ganyana's post on 9.3X62 for buffalo! You cannot go wrong with this load. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

My favorite 9.3x62 load is: 250 gr Accubond CCI 250 primer 54 grs Varget Lapua brass I have never killed anything larger than a whitetail deer, but it should work for MUCH larger game as well.
