Has anyone been able to push a 180 gr nosler partition past 2800fps in a 22" barrel with SAFE pressures? if so what was your load? I'm trying to work up a single load for my rifle that will handle deer at 400 yds and still drive through an elk in close or far away so the partition seems the best choice but I hate paying $28 a box for federal HE loads that only want to group about 1 1/4 inches at 100yds.

When my 30-06 had a 22" barrel it would move the 180 Partition's at 2,760-ish... cutting the barrel to 21" has "reduced" my velocity with the same load to 2,750 fps. Some folks can get 2,800 fps with RL22 in a 22" barrel... I never could and most 22" barrels will not achieve that velocity. However, each barrel is a law unto itself so your's might. Regardless, an extra 50 fps only means something "between the ears."

I get 2810 fps out of my 22" barrel. I use 57.5g H4350 and Win brass and federal 215 primers. I only use the 215 primers because I get better accuracy with them. When I use WLR primers I get about 25 fps less velocity. I'm fairly certain that my pressure is running in the .270 win range, probably about 62k psi, but I could be wrong. My rifle shoots factory ammo averaging 2680 fps so the barrel must be a tad faster than the often quoted figure of 2650 fps for a 22" barreled .30-06.

I should just mention that Noler has a load in their reloading manual that gets 2880 fps with RL22 and 180 grain partitions. I forget the charge weight but this load would probably get over 2800 fps in a 22" barrel.

Try 54gr of H-414, WW brass and Fed 210 primers. I get right at 2800 out of my 22" Featherweight pre-64. jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member
