OK I've FINALLY gotten set up to reload for my .303 British and am looking for some follow on info. My old Sierra manual shows a accuracy load for the 174 MK of 40.7 of IMR 4064. Have some rounds loaded this way but here is my real question. I use so much Varget, by the 8 lb jug, that I'd like to load with that. NEW Sierra manual shows a max load of 38 something for the 174. Anybody have first hand experiance loading this round with Varget?? What have you found to be an accurate load...again using the 174MK.
Thanks in advance!

Sarge

This data is shamelessly stolen from Steve's Reloading Pages http://www.again.net/~steve/311_1.html

Thanks Steve

Hey Sarge,

Have fun with your .303. I haven't loaded for that round in a long-g-g time so I cannot provide much useful info on current powder selection although I used IMR 4064 when I loaded it.

Like yourself, I do appreciate Economy of Scale, so I'd not rush out and purchase a specfic powder for one catridge either unless the cartridge absolutely required it! Especially if there is something you've got on hand that would work suitably.

What I would like to relate is that this was my very first and best overall reloading lesson loading rimmed catridges and adjusting the die to accomodate (exccessive) headspace. Just thought I'd pass that along; so take the time to adjust the dies accordingly AFTER the first loaded rounds have gone down range.

Cheers,

I load for the 303 .
I am not a Varget user .
But , I would recomend a Lee Collet sizer
It will increase case life and accurey greatly if your chamber is 1/2 as oversized as mine .

I have also used a Hornady 30 cal Neck sizer to size just .3" of the neck and then run the expander from the 303 dies thru it .

These loading tricks turned a poor shooter into a great shooter .

I have shot several 1" - 1.25" 5 shot groups , back when my eyes worked better with iron sights .

Sarge I use Varget in my 303's (sold as AR 2208 here in Oz) 41gr is the Maximum load in our local ADI reloading booklet I use 40 grs and haven't had any problems
I use it in my No1 MK111 HT with great results I seat bullets out to touch the rifling and it shoots great

Thanks for the assistance guys. Johnch I use Lee dies exclusively especially the collet dies! Everyone a FWIW this is a No.4 Mk2 manf. in 1954 with EXACTLY 60 rounds fired, I KNOW I fired them! Yes it was in unfired condition when I got it and I'm still working the bolt to get it to loosen up a bit! With the standard Enfield 25 meter site in using Wolf Gold, or what ever they are calling there new ammo it shot a very consistant 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" for 17 rounds. Not to bad for a rifle that isn't broken in yet. This is one reason I want to load for this rifle as I think it will do much better than that. I'll try this IMR 4064 load I have and work from there.
Thanks again all!

Sarge

My P-14 is a good shooter, sometimes under 2" wide, vertical is problem for me and iron sights. If I shoot a mild load of40gr of IMR4064(2200) even the lowly 180 Remington RNs work well.Pushed, they open up.I could push the Sierras 180s(2400+).
