Everyone,

Just picked up a box of the 215 Grain WoodLeigh Bullets for my No4 and am having some trouble locating some load data for these bullets using commonly available canister powders avail here in the US.

Can anyone suggest some sources, loads, experience?

Thanks
Eric

Eric

I have never loaded the 303 British, but I did look around in my library and found some information for you.

As a start, from "Shooting the British Double Rifle" they show the following loads.

215gr bullet, 35gr of AR2208, 2030fps

180gr bullet 42.5gr of AR2209, 2260fps

150gr bullet 43gr of AR2208, 2350fps.

These loads are for 303 double rifles.

An old NRA loading manual I have lists the following loads:

With a 216 gr Norma bullet;
49gr of IMR4350, 2404fps, 43400psi.

43.5gr of IMR4320, 2360fps, 44,300psi.

They show a factory load with a 215gr bullet at 2185fps with 45,080psi.

A newer NRA loading manual shows one load with a 215gr bullet;

49.5gr of IMR4350, 2432fps, 44,360psi.

Hope these loads help.

Thanks for the info...
What powder available over the counter would be the equiv of the AR2208, 2209 powders you listed?
I have some IMR-4350 on hand so I may give that a try.

Not looking for smokin velocities - just something accurate in the 2000-2100 fps range for a close range thumper load for elk and deer.
Thanks again
Eric

Eric, AR2208 is Varget, AR2209 is H4350, ADI manufacture these in Australia for Hodgdon. The ADI manual gives a start load of 36 gr of 2208 for 2130 fps with a max of 39.5 for 2265fps. For 2209 they list a start of 42 gr for 2045 pfs & max of 45gr which is compressed for 2185fps. The IMR 4350 should load very like 2209, and on that data I would be surprised if you could get into much trouble, it would seem as though you wouldn't get enough 4350 in the case to cause any grief.
