I have been using Winchester cases stoked by 26gr of W748 fired by CCI small magnum primers and Hornady 53 gr HP bullets. This is a maximum load but shoots very well in my Tikka M55 and performs well on varmits out to 250 yards.I suggest working up to 25gr first, and using magnum primers with W748. Hope this helps. [Roll Eyes]

Gidday Oneils,
How are u?What do u use the .22 with that load rabbits and/or roos and how does it work?
I use ar2206 22grs and 55 grain projectiles for roos.

This load with the 53gr hornady bullet is a bit harsh on rabbits unless head shot, but is excellent on roo's and foxes.I've never had to fire a second shot at anything hit, unlike the 22WMR i used to shoot.I have thought about trading up to a 22.250 but where i live is getting too over populated.

Yes I was thinking of a 22.250 as well but the noise they make and the accuratccy is about the same .I suppose u do get a bit more distance from the 22.250 but like I said the noise is the main factor.
Are you getting many rabbits or has the virus knocked yours around as well?

You can use a number of powders and get good accuracy. Now using AA2230 with a 53 grain bullet and have gotten the best groups. Velocity is around 3200. take your time working up loads and shoot 3 shot groups until you find one that works and then shoot 5 shot groups, they are the only ones that count. You have a great combination there take good care of it. Good Luck

The 222 is one accurate fine shooting mild recoil cartridge. Many powder bullet combination will work. My 222 likes H-322 and IMR-4895 powder with the 50 grian FBHP bullet. The 788 Remington shoots well and should be easy to find the right load it likes. Many powders work well in the 222 such as BLC#2, WW-748, Benchmark, IMR-3031, REL-7, H-322, IMR-4895 just to name a few. If your 788 will not group well chambered in the 222 cartridge there is something very wrong with that rifle.

I bought my .222Rem model 788 new in 1978. I worked up a load when I got the rifle and have never found a better load in 24 years. My load is Win cases, 24gr of IMR4895, CCI primers, and Sierra 52gr BTHP. This load always stays under 1/2" and has produced many one hole groups. The only modification to the rifle was a trigger job and a thin cardboard shim under the front of the action to float the barrel. It's sure not pretty with the used 24X Tasco, but for several years in the early 80's the local groundhog population nearly went extinct because of it.

45Nut; I have owned a 788 in 222 for quite a while. [Also have one in a 700 BDL]My 788 just loves Hodgdon's Benchmark. [Smile] 50 grain Ballistic Tip or Hornady V-max and 24 grains of BM. But it shoots very well with several powders, including H322, AA2015, W748, IMR 3031, IMR 4198, Norma 200, IMR 4895 and Reloder 12 [now out of production] I have shot groups that are well under 1" at 200 meters with my 788, and it wouldn't surprise me if it isn't slightly more accurate than is my 700 in the same chambering. Have fun with yours, it's a keeper. Regards, Eagleye. [Big Grin]

Gents,
Thanks for all the replys. Sounds like I should have a real shootin' machine here,,,one problem though.....My 'smith dropped me a call last nite an we got talkin....well I shall have a switch-barrel gun soon,,,3 barrels.the 222 barrel, another in 300-221(the Whisper, I already have an XP 100 in 300-221) and a 17 Rem. He has already done one for someone else and reports excellent results. I plan on keeping this action busy. Shame on me for not liking factory guns. Couldn't even keep this puppy home long enough to fire a single round...Jeesh 45nut
