Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I have a hard time getting my 23" Sako up to the speeds that most people report in a .308, but that is probably because the only brass I have ever used in it is military. The thicker military brass, while withstanding higher pressures, also reduces case capacity, thus reducing potential maximum velocity at a given pressure. My 150 grain loads top out at just 2800 fps.

with military brass (LC)the pressure signs show up at about 10% below max load for any given powder.
Velocities are in the 2400 to 2600 range for my 24" barrel 1:10 twist.
With WC846 it was more like 15% below staring loads. using blc2 load data.
But 45grs in LC brass produced 2795f/s
that was WAY to HOT for my taste.

I use 49.0 gr. of W-760, Winchester brass and standard primer and the 165 gr. Speer Hot-Core. Not the best powder for the .308, but my Ruger 77 RSI (full stock model) won't shoot anything else. Fussiest gun I've ever owned.
Velocity from the 18.5" barrel is 2550 FPS. The velocity from a 22" barreled Winchester M70 is 2610 FPS.
FWIW, I chronographed some of the Speer Nitrex 165 gr. .308 Win. ammo from the RSI and velocity was almost exactly the same, 2560 FPS.
May not be the fastest .308 load around, but it's accurate in my rifles.

Brian, what bbl. length did you chrono from? That load is defin. pushing the envelope in most rifles. I shot 43.5gr under a 168grSMK for a bit over 2700fps from a 26" M700.

Lake City Brass
Fed 210
43.8 grains TAC
180 Accubond
2675 average FPS

Rem 700 22 inch barrel.

Load is slightly high, but has been great in this rifle.

Also had superup accuracy with 165 Sierra HPBT and IMR 4064. Can't remeber the powder charge off the top of my head, but scary accurate.

In Remington LTR, I get the following velocity while measuring with CED M2 chrono:

- 20" barrel
- Sierra MatchKing 168gr
- Winchester Bras
- 44.7 gr Varget
- CCI BR2

This yields me with 2550 fps at the muzzle.

165 grain Hornady BTSP and 44 grains of IMR 4064 in a Win case and CCI LR primer @ 2608 fps.

I get 2620 ave. for 10 shots with 180 gr. bullets and RL-15, about the same with WW748 and 4064.

I get 2700 with the 165 gr. Noslers and RL-15

I get this in my old Sav. 99s, However I would think in a good bolt gun you could get a tad more.

Mostly today I just use 180 gr. Rem. Corelokts in the Savages as they sure do shoot little groups in my guns, and I don't use them much these days.

One of my favorite loads for the 308, I have been using it for 30 years, for everything from hunting to sillhouette and High Power Service rifle matches, 3 gun rifle matches, and even Sniper Rifle Matches.

This load has proven accurate in bolt rifles, store bought or custom Savage 99,s, M1-A, and 308 Garands [field grade through Super Match], FN-FAL's H&K 91's, in short every 308 I have tried it in.

This load is 39.5gr of IMR 3031 with a 165/168gr bullet.
I have used it with Sierra Match and hunting bullets, Nosler Partitions, and Nosler Ballistic Tips.

It is not a hot load, but I have killed antelope with it as far as 550 yards.

I also use the same powder charge with the above bullets in 180 gr weight, it too is very accurate.

Also with 150 gr bullets[usually Nosler] I use 42 gr of IMR 3031 for a hunting load that will hit the same place as surplus military ball in most 308 battle rifles.

There are a lot of newer powders and hotter loads out there, but these 3031 loads have served me well.

In my pre-64 M70 Featherweight, my all-arounbd load consisted of the Sierra 165-grain HPBT with 51.5 grains of H380 and the Federal 210 primer in Canadian IVI military cases. This load chronographed 2820 FPS @ 10' from the muzzle on an Oehler and also a Chrony BETA model. This load would put three rounds into 1" or less @ 100 yards, and a load substituting the 165-grain Nosler Partition for the Sierra gave essentially the same velocity and was almost as accurate.

I had to cut the powder charge to 48 grains in order to use this powder and bullet in a Savage 99, so you can rest assured it is HOT! It was OK in MY RIFLE-no guarantees in anyone else's rifle, though!
