I have bought a new Douglas barrel in .35 whelen for my Sauer202 rifle. I will mostly hunt deer and elk. what type of bullets and weight are the best for this type of game? I was thinking Swift A-Frame or Barnes TSX, but do these bullets open correct at 200 yards whit the velocity i can accomplish?? Polar

Either of them will do fine.....but in .35 caliber most any bullet of 225-250 grains will work well on elk and deer. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." polar My two favorites in the Whelen are the 225 Nosler Partition or the Speer 250 with R-15. You might also try the Nosler 225 B-tip---it's pretty stout for a B-tip and very accurate. WN Fill your boots, man!

I shoot the 225 gr TBBC in the Federal factory loads. This is the only gun that I do not load for because I know that I would find it difficult to match the accuracy this load gives me. Nothing wrong with the other premium bullets though. Woody

With RL-15 and a 250 grain Speer I am getting about 2470 fps. More importantly I am getting amazing accuracy. Sighted dead on at 200 yards I have a 9 inch drop at 300 yards and just under a 2 1/2 inch group. My barrel is only 22 inches so you might get a little more speed with a longer barrel.

Polar. I have used, and is a big fan of the Woodleigh 250 gr bullet in my 35 Whelen for moose and red deer. My barrel is a 22" Shilen SS with 1-14 twist. But I have been talked into trying the monometal bullets in 215 gr for this years hunt. Have loaded a lokal produced bullet wich is called PBP ( www.performancebullet.no ) It gives outstanding accuracy but I have not tried on game yet. Arild Iversen.

Thanks for the answers. I think i wil try 225 gr Nosler partition and 250 gr Speer Grand slam first. What volocity can i expect whit these bullets using N-140 powder ?

I'm of the thought that in a .35 Whelen, a premium bullet is not really necessary. In most rifles, even a gut busting load will barely make 2600 FPS, more mostly in the 2500-2550 FPS range. I know some say they get more velocity, but in my three .35 Whelen rifles, I'm hard pressed to get much past 2550 FPS. At that speed, the 250 gr. Speer Hot-core or Hornady Interlock should be just fine. I have friends in Canada who use the 250 gr. Speer Hot-core exclusively in their .35 Whelens for moose and last year, one drew a tag for grizzly bear. He chose to stay with the Speer bullet having full confidence in the bullet. I haven't had a chance to shoot anything with mine yet, not because I haven't tried. It's just a plain bitch to try and draw atag for big game here in Arizona and then the damn season is only four days long. I sometimes get the feeling they don't want us to be successful, just send in the money and stay home. Paul B.

Naturally I'm gonna be different... I would us the Sierra 225 grain Spitzer Boat Tail bullet on top of 59.0 grains of RL-12 (if you have any or can find any) and Federal 210 primers. Velocity should be around 2,630 FPS...

225 Partition. The Sierra 225 (like most Sierra game bullets) SUX BIG TIME! I used it on antelope in the 358 Win no less, and damage was waaaaaaaaaaay too much for a "tough" 35 cal bullet. And forget using it on elk or something like that!

My Ruger M-77 Mk II shot MOA with 250-gr. Hornadys and Nosler Partitions. I got 2,550 from a 22" barrel using half a grain less than the published max load of RL-15. As you load for a 35 Whelen, you'll notice that powder makers publish much hotter data than bullet makers. Strange, but there it is. Okie John "The 30-06 works. Period." --Finn Aagaard
