I just picked up some V160 to try in the wifes 3006 with the 180gr SAFs for an up and coming safari in S. A. this spring and am quite impressed. .375 three shot groups at 100 yds. I need some suggestions for my 338wm using 250gr SAFs and VIT powders. I am also surprised about how clean burning the V160 was.

I routinely use N 160 in my .300 Win Mag's and 7x64 (NB. : magnum primers !) with excellent accuracy. I started with the .338 Win Mag but arrived at the conclusion that the factory Win 70 bbl. wasn't up to my expectations as to accuracy. I'm presently having it rebarreled with a Lothar Walther and, once done, I'll resume load development with the trusty N 160. Note that N 165 might produce somewhat higher velocities at the same pressure levels, but why complicate matters if N 160 is already up to snuff.

The N160 is an old and trustworthy fella.
I have used 70 gr with the Hornady RN 250gr bullet with very good accuracy.
Fps is aprox. 2500 fps in my Ruger.

With 200 gr. Barnes X, 71 gr of N160 give aprox 2735, and with 71 gr of N160, the 225 NP clocks in at aprox. 2580 fps with good accuracy.
These are all max loads in my gun.

Thank you very much for the input on the Vit 160 loads for my 338wm. I think that I will try some V165 . I would like to get 2700 out of the 250gr SAFs. Got a good feeling about this powder.

Thanks Paul K

If you can get your hands on a box Norma MRP, its possibly the best 338 win mag powder. Wery close to Reloader 22, but more consistent.

I'm also on N160 for my .338 I only shoot 225 grain Hornadys and Partitions using CCI magnum primers and Norma cases. When I started reloading I found out that the data published by Vithavuori (min 69.4 grs/max 77.5 grs) were too hot for my rifle. 74 grains already gave some 2850 fps in my rifle. Now I settled on a relatively mild load of 70 grains giving 2750 fps. I still have to find out what difference it makes going from mag. primers to standard LR primers.

Dutchgus, only your particular rifle will tell. With magnum calibers and N160, I started with CCI 250's and never had to question the choice. However in my 7x64 + N 160, I experienced vertical stringing with std. primers and had to resort to CCI 250's also to tighten groups but, as I said for a starter, each rifle is a law on itself...
