Dear all,

Alliant has come out with their PowerPro line of powders. They claim increased load density, better metering, maybe less temperature sensitivity, high energy, etc. - the usual.

What has been your experience, especially with load density, temperature sensitivity, and burn rate for each?

PwrPro 300 MP (magnum pistol)

PwrPro 2000 MR (medium rifle)

Pwrpro 4000 MR (magnum rifle)

Thanks ahead of time for sharing.

Regards, AIU

I just saw the first can of it last weekend. I have not looked at the loading data for it yet.

Ackley, I have done extensive load development in my custom 35 Whelen Ackley Improved 40°. Nearly everyone says that Reloader 15 is THE powder for the Whelen, but the 2000-MR is quite a bit better.

My rifle has a 14" twist 24" barrel, and has given the following chronographed loads, all with less than .0020 CHE:
225 Nosler Partition @ 2775 fps
250 Hornady IL-SP @ 2655 fps
250 Nosler Partition @ 2625 fps
275 Hawk RT (.035 jkt.) @ 2465 fps

I used the same Remington 35 Whelen cases 10 times in working up the loads, and primer pockets were still snug. The powder meters accurately enough to load max loads without weighing each charge (+/- .1 grains).

Someone on another forum has used the 2000-MR to achieve 2465 fps with a 300 gr bullet in a 9.3x62 Mauser with a 20" barrel and no pressure signs. It's terrific stuff!

BTW, I forgot to add that I backed off .5 grains from my max load with the Hornady 250 SP, still giving 2625 fps, and fired a 3-shot group at 100 yds measured at .475". This from a 9 lb. Mark X Mauser with only a 9x power scope.

There is as many powders on the market as there are fishing lures.

I bought some RL-17 which alliant list as a good powder for a 338WM and says you will pick up 100-150fps, I don't think so IMR 4350 is faster by 50-70fps W/180gr bullets and about same FPS with RL-19 and better accuracy.

I have a tackle box full of lures I never use.

Thanks for the input. Whelenite, does the PP 2000 MR have a higher load density than Re15?

Yes it does, AIU. RL-15 is a stick powder at 14.164 grains per cc, while 2000-MR is a ball powder at 14.993 grains per cc. That works out to about 3.5 grains more 2000-MR to bullet base than RL-15 in my Whelen Improved.

Temmi, in Handloader volume 264, R.H. VanDenburg, Jr. did a write-up on 300-MP. He used 24 grains under the 300 LBT cast bullet for 1200 fps in a 5-1/2" Ruger in 45 Colt.
