Reloading the 350 Legend

I just picked up a CVA Cascade rifle in 350 Legend. I've ordered a set of Lee Dies and now I need some bullets. This rifle will be used strictly for Whitetails in a straight wall cartridge area.

My plan is to start working up loads with either the 165 Gr. Hornady FTX or the Hornady 170 Gr. Interlock bullet. Hopefully, I can find some locally. Anyone have any experience with either of these bullets? I'm going to start with WW 296 powder simply because I have some.

Anyone has any pet loads they would care to share or any other tips for reloading this cartridge? I'm normally an RCBS guy when it comes to dies but I was disappointed when I learned that the RCBS dies used a roll crimp. Not a good idea in my opinion for a cartridge that headspaces on the mouth of the case. The Lee dies are taper crimp so that is why I went that route.

Tom, good luck. The CVA guns typically have Bergara barrels, about which no more need be said. The Hornady FTX gets fairly consistent criticism for being on the soft side, at least in other calibers.

I use the hornady 170gr bullets in front of 26 gr h110/ win 296 with good results. I have used the 165gr flex but found the 170s were better and cheaper. Also if u want a factory round that shoots very well try the 150gr plastictip winchester load amazingly accurate but I don't trust 150gr to do the job on big deer.

Also when reloading the cases are very thin and easily messed up when seating the bullets

You can taper crimp in the FL sizing die.
The 350 is very popular here; guys all use AR-15s, and since the 350 has no recoil, they can blast away in the brush at deer. Sometimes they hit other hunters; at least once a year it happens. No one reloads for it here; these guys are not rifle or reloading enthusiasts; they are party hunters and it is more of a social function. Groups of 12-15 are common. It is quite scary if you are close.
As for reloading, I was very disappointed when I learned it was a 9mm and not a 358. But bullets are now easier to get than when it first came out.
Good luck with it; they will kill deer.

to me, it always seemed like a neat little cartridge. However, for shooting deer, that may work. I wonder how the accuracy is. I would not think that past 200 yards or so it would hold its accuracy. Shooting a 9mm that far, the bullet will only hold its trajectory for so long. You can't beat the physics....

They do have long pointed hunting bullets; I just meant it is 9mm in diameter instead of what we all know and like in a 35 caliber rifle; .358. So they will get to 200 yards before they drop to the earth like a stone.
It was made a 9mm due to the massive machinery already set up for 9mm diameter bullets. And that often the shooting industry has no idea what they are doing.
It is still a .356 150 at 2300 fps or a 180 grain at 2100. Drop is like 8 inches at 200 but that can be fixed with our usual zero of plus two at 100. I just read that recoil is less than a 243, which is why guys here like it. None of them can handle recoil any more. Not sure why.
So, it isn't terrible, but I don't want one. It's like a 35 Remington in an AR platform. Which is a great round of course.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to go with the 170 Grain Hornady Interlock bullet. Where I hunt 150 Yds. would be a long shot with most shots being under 100 yds. I got a very good deal on the Cascade from a dealer on Gunbroker.

Can't use semi auto centerfire rifles for hunting in PA. Another stupid PA rule like no hunting on Sunday with the exception of a few days each year.

An easy to load cartridge. For my needs I use I4227 and 220 gr. cast bullets at 1900 fps. So far it has performed perfectly.
