Pleasant 270 load for this wimp

After many years of bashing the calibre it's time to eat my hat and shoot my newly aquired 270.

Seeing as it sports a metal buttplate and I'm averse to recoil I'm not wanting to hop it up.

I've prepped a friends cases, primed them with federal 210s and have some sierra 130gr gamekings waiting. I'd be happy with 2,800fps (sort of 7x57levels)

Thinking of Viht N160 and not far off start loads but wondering if H4895 (Nosler and Hodgdon show data) might give less recoil.

If you happen to have any IMR - 3031 on hand give 46.5 grs a try.

I worked up that load using the Nosler BT's for my mom to shoot, and it flat out drops everything it hit like lightning.

Very mild load, my daughter shot it when she was nine, and my mother shot it into her early 70's. The rifle was a plain jane Rem 700 with the plastic butt cap. Total weight of the gun and scope was right at 7 3/4 lbs. Not a heavy weight by any stretch.

Loads are one resolve but there are some real advances in recoil pads to check out. Lighter bullets will deliver less recoil. Nosler is bringing out the 110gr Accubonds and Barnes now has the 110gr TTSX. Hodgdon also lists some really good reduced loads using H4895 on their web site.

For practice and varmint shooting, using IMR 3031 with light loads (starting loads in the Sierra manual) and 90g Sierra HP BTs is awesome. I've shot literally thousands of those through my 270.

For higher power loads, H4831 and 130g bullets and Norma MRP and 150g bullets work well for me.

agreed...this should be a fairly light load..... but then you won't be using the full advantage of the .270......and it'll still kill deer in their tracks!

Having given this a little more thought here is recommendation #2;
  • 34.2 gr. IMR4198
  • 130gr psp.
  • 2550 fps. Muzzle velocity
  • 2150fps @ 200yds.
  • 1330 foot lbs. of energy at 200 yds.
  • 150yd zero
  • Minus 2.7" @ 200yds.
  • This than would yield a fine deer getter out to 200 yds. and than some.Low recoil, good trajectory and ample killing power for deer size game. beer

The major contributors to recoil are the mass of the escaping gas times its velocity plus the mass of the bullet and its muzzle velocity.
The mass of the gas is in fact the mass of the powder which is reduced from the 3031 loading by almost 25%. The gas escape velocity will than be reduced in some significant proportion also. thumbroger

The bullet velocity is reduced by almost 10%.

Barnes 110 TTSX over min load 4064. If you feel any recoil it won't be much....about like a 243 with a stout charge under a 105 bullet.

Bro kills lots and lots of game with his 110s in his 270 with about 56.0 gr IMR4350. I use H4350 with my 110 TTSX and shooting the rifle is only noticeable due to noise. I killed my TX antelope last fall with this combo at 200 yrds.

Ran a cross this one on a forum a few years ago and it's a tack driver in my 270:

"accuracy load" for the 270 Winchester using a 130 grain bullet to be 43.5 grains of IMR4064 powder which yields 2724 fps with 39,000 C.U.P.

The smaller the powder charge you can use to get the desired velocity, the lower the recoil will be. Powder weight is one of the factors in calculating free recoil.
