The subject of solvent "aromas" came up recently, and I couldn't help but remember how bad the Hoppes smelled after using Ed's Red for so long. Does anyone else use this homebrew solvent? For those not familiar with Ed's Red, check out http://shotgunreport.com/Articles/EdRed.html Rick.

I've used it for about a year. Like the other posters mentioned it works great for carbon and powder residue. I use Sweets 7.62 for getting out any copper fouling. -- Scott

Hoppees stinks? That's Chanel #5 to me. Currently use REM bore cleaner for copper. Shooters Choice for the inside/ Hoppees for the outside for blued barrels/ actions, even wipe down wood stocks with it....just like my Dad did. Dan Remember the smell of the old Hoppee's gun oil...smelled like bananas to me .... those were the days.

Why not just use Ballistol instead? I know about Ed's Red, but are there any studies to compare its performance to Shooters Choice, Hoppes, Ballistol, etc? Crickey, hot soapy water will clean most stuff except metal fouling. Glass Plus is the hot set-up for blackpowder guns, especially BPCR. jim dodd ------------------
