Can someone recommend a good bullet/powder combo for Warthog using a .270? Thanks DW

If you look at the latest Barnes reloading manual, they have tons of really good photos from animals shot using their bullets. Believe it or not, there are not one , but 2 photos of warthogs shot with the .22 Hornet. I asked my Deutsch SudWestAfrikaner (Namibian) freind about that, and he said the 22 Hornet was pretty well distributed in SWA, because a lot of people used to poach with it. He said tons of warthogs are taken with 22 Hornets. If a Hornet will take one, then I reckon just about anything will. My buddy shot one with a 270, using my load of Vihtavouri N-160 under Nosler 160 grain partitions. In fact, since the warthog (Vlakvark) is an opportunity animal, (you probably won´t be hunting them specially, you´ll run into them while stalking other game) you will probably have another rifle in your hand when you see one. Since most warthogs are not running around in europe, will you be taking a .270 to afrika just to shoot a warthog with? Just a question. By the way, that 270 load has shot german wild boar up to 116 kilos, and dropped them fine, as well as a few red deer. The germans all dislike the 270, but love the 7X64, which is pretty similar. I know, I know, it ain´t the same though, but it is pretty similar.

Mike. Thanks Yes, we are taking the 270 as the 243s we are taking we have been told are not actually deemed as useful against the Warthogs. We are taking a vermin shooting week, so the Warthog will be the only thing the 270 will be used for. My original intention was to use the 243 with Barnes triple x 85 grainers. DW

I've never owned a .270 Win but I have a couple of friends that use it. They have had excellent results on feral hogs in here Texas using the 150 gr Nosler Partition. Just my armchair opinion: Any good, premium 150 gr bullet in the .270 Win should work fine on Warthogs. Nosler Partition, Woodleigh, Barnes TSX, etc. Personally, I like the idea of the 160 gr Nosler Partition in the .270 Win but, as I stated above, I've never used a .270 so I have no personal experience with it. (I have shot several Warthogs with the .30-06, 8x57, and 9.3x62.) Just my two cents worth.... -Bob F.

I, too, cannot claim using the 270 for Warthogs.....but seriously, if you can't kill them cleanly with just about any 150 grain bullet from the 270, you're in need of more than a different gun! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
