My vintage 1963 Mc Gowen varmiter would digest accurately almost any 50 to 55 grain bullet when pushed with 40 gr. of IMR 4350. Those were 250-3000 cases reformed. Today I have a hard time getting 39gr. into a case but it still works well in my home barreled action. roger

I use 38.7 gr H380 with 52 gr JLK LD bullets seated .005 off the lands in my Cooper. The rifle consistently shoots 5 shot groups in the .4's out to 650 yds with this load. The best group fired was a 3-shot .068 at 100 yds with 50 gr V-Max's. This load chrono's at 3550 from a 24" barrel.

The following load shoots boringly consistent .6s out of my Win M70 HV (precursor to "Shadow" series). The rifle is mostly stock, except for trigger job. The load falls under "book" maximum, but as always, drop a few grains and work up for individual gun.

-Win brass, prepped (primer pockets uniformed, flash hole deburred, trimmed to minimum length)
-Fed 210M primers
-33.5 gr Varget
-55gr V-Max
-OAL 2.350"

ABCanuck:

I have done a lot of testing of loads with the 22/250, in several rifles. Without exception the best velocity/accuracy combo I have gotten was with RL 7. The info was pretty straight out of the Lyman # 47 Manual. Bullet weight from 63 grains down all the accuracy was with RL 7.

Honorable mention does go to one load in a PacNor rebarreled Model 70 which is 25 grains of IMR 4198 and a 52 grain Speer HP, or a 50 grain Speer TNT. Info came originally from Load Data for a 224 Weatherby Rocket out of the Lyman 47th Manual again.

In smaller cases I am a believer that the faster powders, that you use less of also, has given me the best velocity and accuracy combo.

Load data now a days, always wants to suggest using slower powders, supposedly for lower pressures and fuller cases, but to me the main motivation is just to sell more powder when the consumer uses more.

I use less powder so I can just shoot more.

A lot of sage rat 'ghosts', and Seagull feces can attest to that over in Lakeview and Bonanza. That combo has accounted for a couple of thousand of the little critters last season.

Cheers and Happy Holidays

I can tell you the most accurate load in my rifle but that in no way means that it will shoot well in your rifle. The same goes for OAL.Chamber throats vary so much that you need to trial and error that for your rifle. The most accurate load in my rifle is the 50gr vmax ahead of 34gr of imr3031 in a remington case with a federal 210 primer. The rifle is a 700vssf.
