Have been playing with one of my .270s the last couple days. Have had this rifle now for many years: shot some deer with it. Its a pre-64 model 70 re-barrelled by Mark Penrod with a heavy 26 1/2" Hart barrel. I've always used the standard 130 gr. load of 60 or 61 grains of H4831 which has shot acceptably for me. Hadn't shot it for some time. It wasn't grouping like it used to so I tried a little R22 which shot about like the 4831. Then based on comments made by a small number of .270 users, I tried 4064: 49 1/2 gr. Could be a fluke, but 1st group was .4" for 3 shots: then ran out of time. I know 4064 is considered too fast burning for the .270 with 130s, but have any other .270 users tried 4064 with 130 s and what have you found? thanks

Some of the bet accuracy I have had with the 270 is with 4064/4895/4320/Varget and also for the 300 Winchester. Top velocities for 100 and 110 in the 270 and 150 grain in 300 Winchester.

my best accuracy has always came from 4350 with 130's

I have had the 270 in bench rest style rifles and I would give the edge to 150 grain bullets. However, we are talking small differences. One time I shot a 15 shot group made up of 5 Ballistic Tips, 5 of the old Solid base Noslers and 5 with the partitions and the 15 shot group was right on 1/2 inch. But in general I would agree with you on 130s/4350. If a 270 won't well with that combination then you probably have a crap barrel, bedding problems or scope or mount problems. While I have had top accuracy with 4064/4895/4320/Varget I would not choose those powders to test a new 270.

Yes, it could be a fluke. Or not. You'll have to shoot more groups, preferably with more shots, to establish its real accuracy potential. If you don't need (or want) optimal velocities and don't mind the typically wider velocity spreads that faster powders usually generate, then a judicious load of 4064-ish powder is fine in a the .270/130 combination. But your long custom barrel is pretty much a waste with too-fast burning powders. I'd be much more comfortable with a nearly full case of IMR 7828SSC.

If that is like IMR 7828 from years ago a bit slow for the 270 with 130 grains.

IMR 7828 is about the same speed as Norma 205/RL-22. And the tight-packing SSC version lets you get about 5% more powder by weight into a given cartridge case. So, how does 3250 fps from a 24.4" barrel sound? I'll admit, however, that this is a "fast" barrel and it has turned in similar high velocities with other powders. By the way, the chronograph is an Oehler 35 with a four foot screen spacing for more precision and which has been cross-tested with dozens of different rounds over dozens of years.

That's fast. The faster I have had from a 270 was 3050 f/s with Re19 and 150 grain bullets and that was from a M70 Featherweight. Also Oehler 35

Yep, it is a very surprisingly fast barrel. The famous Jack O'Conner load of 60 grains of surplus 4831 is excessively hot in this rifle. 58.5 grains (of my diminshing supply) of surplus 4831 is all it will take and that generates in excess of 3200 fps with a 130 grain bullet. I tried some IMR7828SSC in it just to see if it would be a useful substitute for the surplus 4831 when my supply is exhausted and found that it works magic -- in this particular rifle.

Hmmm, I use Jacks old loads of old surplus 4831, have about 50 lbs of it, His load btw was 62 grs. his articles were 60 grs. I shoot both in my win fwt pre 64..New 4831 won't hold much more than 58 gr. of that ole stuff.. He also used IMR 4064 in both his 270 and 30-06, and its still a great powder.. But of todays powders for the 270 and 30-06 its hard to beat RL 22 and RL 19, it meters so accurately and smooth, 4831 does not..I have not tried today SC 4831 but it sounds good to me. The best thing about 4831 of any kind is it has less PSI for velocity than any other powder on the market as far as I can tell. You cannot get enough 4831 of any kind in a 270 or 3006 case to damage a rifle, much less blow a modern action up.
