Robert Hoppe Sets 600 Yard NBRSA Record with Hornady 105-Grain A-MAXâ„¢ Bullets Robert Hoppe of Nevada probably has an embarrassing nickname or two to his credit, but his friends are calling him "deadeye" since he shattered the standing 600-yard light gun five-shot group record at a National Benchrest Shooters Association (NBRSA) registered match in Sacramento, California on October 28, 2007. Hoppe's 0.5823" certified record group was shot with Hornady 105-grain A-MAXâ„¢ bullets, using Varget powder from a 6mm Dasher (Light Gun) with a 28" Hart Barrel, Panda Action with Jewell trigger, Dierks carbon fiber stock, and Nightforce 8-32X scope. Hoppe's group represents the smallest five-shot group ever recorded in registered 600 yard benchrest competition. "Success is a matter of finding the perfect combination of bullets and powder to work with your gun," said Hoppe. "The A-MAXâ„¢ bullets were the right combination for me..." Hoppe has been a lifelong hunter and reloader, and a long-range target shooter for 15 years. He has participated in 600-yard competitions since 2003. Hornady's A-MAXâ„¢ bullets achieve near perfect flight with an aerodynamic secant ogive, and unequaled concentricity to deliver an extremely high ballistic coefficient. Known for extreme accuracy, the A-MAXâ„¢ has become a favorite among long-range match shooters. "We congratulate Robert on an outstanding group record," said Jason Hornady, Vice President and Director of Sales for Hornady Manufacturing. "And we're pleased that the A-MAXâ„¢ played a part in his record-breaking achievement." The 600-yard competition was officially sanctioned as a benchrest discipline by the NBRSA in 2003. In the light gun category, guns must not exceed 17 pounds including scope, and competition consists of three, timed sighter periods followed by timed record-string shots. Group size is determined by measuring centerpoint to centerpoint of the most distant bullet holes. Hoppe's 0.5823" group at a combined length of six football fields is an impressive achievement among long range marksmen, and is expected to remain unchallenged for quite some time. Hornady Manufacturing Company has been a leading supplier of bullets, ammunition, and reloading accessories for over 50 years. Well respected in the shooting, hunting and match arena, Hornady guarantees the type of performance shooters demand from their bullets and ammunition. http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=773

That's amazing! The first time out with my 6mm AI using 105 grain Amaxes I had two shots like that, then I quit. Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

Most shooters can't shoot that group at 60 yards let alone 600 yards. That is some incredible shooting!

6mm Dasher With stronger brass due to the small rifle primer pocket, magnum primer, and a bushed firing pin, the 6mm Dasher use higher pressure in a smaller case to equal the velocity of 60,000 psi 243 Win. The 6mm Dasher uses the 6mmBR brass, but has a 40 degree shoulder instead of 30 degree.

That is AWESOME. I can't conceive of shooting that kind of a group at 600 yards. Kudos to Mr. Hoppe. Don

I read about this and saw the pic when it first happened. That is some fine shooting indeed. I always want to pick the brains of shooters like that and find out just what it took to get that load. Less than 1" at six hundred yards. Just think about that for awhile. Unreal. Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

That's truly an incredible group!! I get giddy over groups like that at 100 yards, I can't even conceive of what it takes to do that at 600.... W-O-W!!! "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths."

Does anyone have any knowledge of what his "Aggregate" for 5-shot, 600-yard groups was that day? Or do they just shoot the one 5-shot group at that distance?

Saw this on 6mmbr site, not as small a group but all of them in the 10X ring: http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/sam-hal...-group-at-600-yards/ pretty amazing either way.

Quickload thinks the best a 105 gr Amax can do from a 6mm Dasher with 29" barrel is 3277 fps at 80,000 psi, with 35.5 gr W748. Quicktarget thinks that a 1.2 mph wind would deflect that bullet .56" at 600 yards. If I see that the wind is 5 mph or less, it is an unusually good day for a trip to the range. What does it all mean? 1) I am not going to get a .58" group at 600y around here. 2) That guy must have been shooting just before sunrise to get the wind that still. You need dead calm for Krieger to put you in their advertismenets
