I used 43 grs. of IMR-3031 in my Sharps .45-70. This was using the RCBS .45 cal. paper patched bullet mould. When all was said & done, the bullet weighed about 535 grs. I found no load data for this but since I had used 47 grs. with a 420 gr. flat nose, I extrapolated the load. I could detect no excessive pressure signs and as I recall, I got about 15-1600 fps as measured on the chrono. Took a moose with this load too. As I recall, I tried 1 - 2 grains of powder more but I figured that the recoil was enough & I didn't want to chance tearing the rifle apart. Be careful & work up is all. Bear in Fairbanks

I just got a bullet mold for 500 gr semi-spitzer lead bullets for my 45/70. I would like you all to help me with a load for my Handi rifle. I have W748, h335, imr4227 and ac2460 along with a few slower rifle powders and a couple faster shotgun powders. I'm hoping for some decent velocity but nothing to brutal. Thanks.

The optimum velocity for this bullet for deep penetration on heavy game is around 1550 FPS.

Use 46 grains of IMR 3031.

(You could go higher. But this should be enough for anything up to elephant!!)
