For years I've used Norma 280 cases for the basis of my wildcats. I've used some Lapua 6mmBR brass and was very impressed. Does anyone know if I could substitute the 7X64 brass for the 280? My base case is very much like a 280 Gibbs is a 40 deg shoulder.

The 280 and the 7x64 are so close in dimensions I am sure you can use them. ------------------ www.accuratereloading.com

Ramrod, Just make sure that you have an oversize shoulder to headspace on. The 7X64 neck is a tad shorter than the 280. If you load 280 as is and fireform you will get misfires and case stretching. The best way to do this is expand the neck to .30 first. Then size down with a 7X64 die. What I do if I use 270 or 30-06 brass is load with a cast bullet and some 16gr of fast pistol powder (squib load). The cast bullet is jammed into the lands. Then fireform. I bought 100 R-P brass headstamped 7X64 and I am darn sure it was 280 Rem brass. I got lots of misfires and case head seperations from that batch, before I sussed the problem. Cheers Pete

Pete, A few years ago a friend gave me a box of new, unfired 7x64 RP brass that absolutely WAS regular old .280 Rem brass but headstamped 7x64 !! It was in the orange and green box with the white styrofoam holder. VERY strange indeed.

Be carefull with any new brass.I recently bought a couple hundred Winchester nickel plated brass in 280 rem cal. About 1/2 of it was 30-06 brass with a 280 headstamp. The cases were clearly shorter than 280 cases & the 30 cal neck was a giveaway also.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll pick up a box and mic it out comparing it to my norma 280. The norma has always been great allowing me to neck up to 375 from 280. However, I would like a little harder primer pocket.
