Pressures are gonna be sky-high with those loads...possibly dangerously high!

I've been able to fit 82.0 grains of W-760 in a .375 case...that is about it...

Hello folks,

I just bought some .375 cal Barnes 250gr X-bullets. The guy at the store was kind enough to give me a photocopy of the Barnes reloading manual #3 for that particular caliber. Now reading through the data I was surprised to see the velocity of their maximum loads!!! For example they advertise 2887 fps with 76.5gr of RL-15 behind a 250gr bullet!!! Looking down to the 270gr XLC, they advertise 2867 fps with 84.5gr of Win 760!!! Has anyone been able to fit 84.5gr of powder in a 375 h&h case, even if compressed? Has anyone been able to chronograph there loads to correlate the data in the manual? Just wondering if these velocities are possible out of a 375h&h!!!

Thanks for replying back to this post.

I would think so. I'm getting right at 2800 FPS (2796 avg.) using 270 gr. RN Hornadys in my M70 (with 24 barrel) using
76 gr. RL 15. I think it's a little too hot (for hot weather) so I am going to back it down a grain or so. I didn't see any pressure signs when the temp. was around 70 F but someday hope to get to Africa to whack something big and smelly with it.

Enigma,
The Barnes Reloading #3 had some typos in it. Barnes released new pages for it shortly after it was released. I do not know if this page was one with an error. If I were you and I had a question on some of the information I would send them an e-mail at customer service before I loaded. They sent "sticky pages" with the corrected information to all that let them know they had a manual. The manual has been in the field at least a year maybe two now.

I've been shooting the 270 gr Barnes X. 71.0 gr of RL-15 yields 2660 fps in my Weatherby MkV ... and that is actually plenty of go.

Accuracy is fine. Groups are 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" at 200 yards.

Enigma,

Havent shot it over the crono, would guess it at 2650, 2700 if I had to guess. I'll drag my crono to the range some day and find out.

As far as barrel fouling, fouled every barrel I ever shot them in, guess that why barnes make a strong cleaner. But they are good hunting bullets.

I've been using them for years, only dug two out, one out of a bear, other out of a Kudu.

As much as I hate to admit it, my 375 is a SS Remington, it was cheap what can I say, other than it shoots good.

Thanks,

Could you give me some information regarding the rifle you own in that caliber; avg velocity if you have a chronograph. I was also wondering about the fowling? How bad is it? Never used Barnes X in the past... What kind of accuracy are you getting? 2 inches groups at 100 yards is plenty for me.. Probably won't do much better than that on most days anyways!
