6.5 x 55 reloading question
I have a new Tikka rifle in 6.5 x 55. I have been playing with loads using 120 grain Nosler ballistic tips and IMR 4831, which has proven to be the best powderI have used. My question is this: In a new firearm, I probably should be able to run things a little hotter as I believe the load data for this cartridge has to fit a lot of guns which may be older and not as strong. As I increase the powder charge, the groups get tighter, and there are no signs of pressure. I am currently at 49.5 grains, with no pressure signs, and would like to use 50.5. Also, if I should be trying another powder, please tell me. IMR 4350 and Varget did not do nearly as well as 4831 in my rifle. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

That is something that happens frequently with the older cartridges and the reloading book data due to safety and lawyers.

Many guys discover that they can push beyond max in new firearms.

Use a chrony, watch for velocity to start leveling off as you increase powder charge. Start by checking the velocity of the previous loads you have been using.

When you increase grains of powder, and see a smaller increase in velocity, than you have been getting with prior increases, you are max-ing your firearm.

Watch all pressure signs as you increase, being as safe as possible.

You may want to consider Gerards GS custom bullets in the Swede. He is apparently getting great velocity out of his loads. Good luck and be careful. "D"

I also have a new Tikka in 6.5x55 and had very good results with H450. It's not a big case and it's difficult to get what would be a respectable (by today's standards) velocity. If it groups well, be happy.
