45gr Sierra Hornet 26.5 gr. 2230-C, Norma case, Wsr primer, 1.942" OAL. 3300 fps. Never hit berm or target. Bullet came apart before it got 10 yards down range. roger

Did it make it thru your chrony before detonation?

Fireformed some .300 H&H brass using 110-grainers. Couldn't tell what happened (and it didn't matter) past 25 yards. Target there showed at least two holes many inches "high" and "low" of the bull. Yep!

I've had this happen a number of times with the 17 Remington. Just a white or gray streak that never makes it to the 100 yard target. The bullet makes it through the chronograph at 4600+ fps but that's about it.

I had some Nosler SHOTs, 6mm 55 grain that I loaded "warmly" for a 10 twist 6mm Rem. Near's we could tell disintegration was occurring 50-60 ft from the muzzle.

The velocity was from a previous identical load with a 45gr. Berger . roger

Maybe those Hornet bullets were not designed for 3300 fps?

loaded some of the old sierra 50 gr blitz bullets in a 22/250 some time back. they were designed for 3200 not 3900. when we'd shoot them we could see the blow up in the air half way to the target. never did find out just what they'd to to a crat at close range

Years ago I used to demonstrate to others what happens when you load a thin jacket bullet in a high velocity cartridge.

I used to load some of the bullets Speer used to make - cannot remember their name, but they were supposed to have explosive expansion at 222 Remington velocity.

We used to fire them up to the sky, and one can see a sort of mist as the shot is fired as the bullet comes apart.

The old blitz and SX bullets would be torn apart buy the 1-7" twist of my AR-15.

I loaded some of the old 50 grain Hornady SSP (single shot pistol) bullets in my 26", three groove, PacNor barreled 22.250.

Same thing, not a mark on the target paper at 100 yards.

I first witnessed this with a 6.5 Arasaka 30 " barrel, I converted to a 6.5 X .284 in 1966.
NO 140 grain bullet would hold together. The three bullets that finally worked were the Barnes' original 156 gr. , Norma's 160 gr. and hornady's 160 gr.
What a killer
A small buck at 50 feet almost had his shoulder on the far side blown off.
A mature doe at 25 feet appeared to have had a hand-grenade go off in her chest cavity.

I built a 22-243 Middlested way back in the bad old days...the only bullet that would survive to the target was the now long discontinued Nosler 50 gr solid base or heavier.

I used SX's, Blitz or TNT's to impress the crowd...just a blue/gray puff of smoke 15 to 30 yds down range. Lot's of ooh's and ahh's and a bunch of other epithets of a more course vernacular EVERY TIME.

I shoot 60 gr and heavier mostly. I'm on my 3rd or 4th barrel now and I still load up a few 45-50 gr varmint style bullets to get a laugh now and then. LOL
