Hey there Accurate Reloaders,

I just picked up some 240gr Rem .429 JSPs for my 44 Mag.

Anyone have any handloads for these rounds that you would care to share?

Eric, I load them in a 44 ruger auto. I just substitute 240 HP data. I find the JSPs do much better on deer than hps out of the rifle.

I shoot them regularly because I was able to purchase a 1000 at give-a-way prices. They are a very good bullet and, as riflegunbuilder says, they are superior on game to a hollow point. If you are a Keith devotee, he hated hollow points and wouldn't use them for anything other than paper punching. I did an experiment one time useing a worn out shovel blade to test for penetration. I fired five 240 gr. HP's into it and only had big heavy pock marks. I then fired five 240 gr. SP's and everyone exited the shovel blade. I usually use 22 gr.s of H-110 with that bullet in my S&W pre-29 4"., but, I would start at 18-19 grs. and work up. You can also substitute WW-296 for H-110.

Thanks for the responses so far. I've heard that these bullets are good for hunting. My ultimate goal is to create a round that I can use in my 44 as back up to my rifle for hogs and deer/black bear hunts. I too have heard that the soft points are preferable to hollow points and there is a boar guide (who posts here on AR) that has been using them for a while now, with good results.

I'm going to try to start in the 1050 to 1200 fps range, and then move up as I practice with them.

W-296

I had used 296 and then I bought a 629 Master Hunter 7.5 it likes heavy load of Accurate No9. and the 240s. With scope it is a 3-4" group at 100yds. Numerous hogs out to 125Yds.

As usual just my $.02

I only have one pistol data point with the RP 240 JHP and that is with H110. I tested H110 and W296 in a Marlin rifle and found that for the same charge weights, the velocities were, for all practical purposes, the same. If you want to shoot magnum loads only, W296 or H110 will provide excellent accuracy with high velocities. The big problem I have found with these two powders is that the manufacturer states it is dangerous to use reduced loads. It is either full power or nothing.

I do not have JHP data with 2400, but I have shot thousands of 44 Magnum rounds with 2400 and would recommend that powder over all others. I have shot a lot of ¾ power loads, which is a 240 grain bullet, usually lead, with 17.5 grains 2400. This will produce velocities between 1100 and 1200 fps in my S. Blackhawk. The classic Keith load, of 22.0 grains 2400 is a superb load and came out of my pistol at 1336 fps with a 240 L. I have no doubt that the JHP/JSP will be about the same velocity.

I always like about 18 - 18.5 grains of 2400 Alliant Powder . H4227 about 22.5 23.5 grains is my best accuracy load runs around 1375-1425 Fps. if memory serves me well . I think H110 is about the same load also ?. maybe some one else could verify that , I wouldn't want to misinform anyone on a load . I'm at the computer not the bench so I don't have it right in front of me . I pretty sure though ...

Does anyone remember what is the first thing that goes ?... salute

Ditto, 296 for me and my 8 3/8's inch.

Sub 2 MOA at 100 yards and full throtle loads.

It's a great cartridge now being overshadowed by Bigger is better mentality, which of course is why I brought mine 35 years ago! Wink

I guess I am old school. I still use Elmer Keith's 22. grains of 2400 with a standard pistol primer. Shoots very well in my 29's or marlin rifle. I like the Speer 240 grain half jacket for a hunting bullet.
