6.5x55 and 7mm-08 powder selection
I have a Cz in 6.5x55 and my son shoots a 7mm-08 Mauser sporter. For most applications we would both probably use bullets in the 100-140 gr. range and eventually 160 gr. I would like to keep my powder stores simple i.e. one powder for both cartridges. I am hoping to hear which powder is your favorite for the bullet weights in each. If you load for both do you use the same powder?

Thanks,
Eric

I recently picked up a 6.5 Sweed that shoots well with RL-22 with 140 grain bullets. My 7mm-08 is currently shooting RL-15 with 140 grain Partitions, but I might be switching bullets soon.

In the 6.5X55 i had a Sako & a Winchester mod 70. Both rifles shot 139 gr bullets as well as 125 gr nosler partitions. Best powders were H4350 (AR 2209) & VV N160. I found Re22 too slow but re19 was as good as H4350.

In the 7mm08 my Kimber shoots 140 / 150 gr bullets very well with Varget (AR2208). H4350 & N160 are almost as good. I did not get great results with Re15.

I find Varget a great versatile powder for 222 Rem, 7mm08, 308 Win, 358 Win, 9.3X62 etc.

This!

I use IMR4350 in both my 6.5x55 and 7-08 and R19 in the 7-08 and 260rem which is a 6.5 Swede in cognito. Any powder in this burn range to a little faster would work well IMO

I don't load for the 7mm-08 but in loading for the 6.5x55 anything I cannot do in that cartridge with either RL-19 or IMR-4350 simply isn't worth doing.

I've had good results in the sweed with 130gr Nosler accubonds and H4831. I've never loaded for the 7mm-08, but it appears it likes a little faster powder, so if I was going to try only one for both it would be either W760, or 4350...which ever one I had on the shelf. You also mentioned light bullets in the 100gr range. For the light stuff I'd consider 4895.

A 120 BT over 45g of Varget does very well in my 7-08.

Is that kosher to feed a Finnish powder to a Swedish cartridge?

One daughter has a 7x57 and the other daughter has a 7-08. Like you, I was hoping for one powder/one bullet for both rifles but no luck there. The 7-08 shoots hornady 139gr best with H335 and the 7x57 shoots 145gr speer with H 4350. Good luck to you and your son.

Nice part of those two cartridges, is they are close in capacity and can use a lot of the same powders. Anything in the range of H414,the 4350's etc, will work in either one with a 140gr. I don't have any of the data I had for my 6.5x55 anymore, I know I used 760 in it, and that is what I use in my 7-08.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone. I only have a few more factory loads left so I guess I had better get off the fence. I haven't used Varget yet and have always liked 4350. I'll have to dig out the books once I get back home
