H205 has a burning rate very similar to IMR 4350. I found that when using it in a .30/40 Krag Ruger No. 3, and also in an 8X60S Mauser, both using 200-grain bullets, a charge of H205 that was exactly the same weight as a load of IMR 4350 gave the same velocities, but with noticeably less apparent pressure . (According to my "Good Burning Rate Chart", H414 is No. 165 and H205 is No. 166. So, I guess it is pretty much like IMR 4350, WW 760, etc., as far as it's relative quickness placement.)

I believe it will perform pretty much the same vs IMR 4350 in a .30/'06. But I think the pressure/velocity relationship between H205 and IMR 4350 changes when you load larger charges of the two in magnum-sized cases!

I had several VERY GOOD loads (that cannot be duplicated for pressure/velocity relationships by any other propellant)worked up with H205, and I was upset when Hodgdon stopped selling it! The reason given for discontinuing it was that it just never became popular.

I cant find any recipes for this powder. I load for a 222, 256 Newton, 284 Win, 30-30 and 30-06. Or is it more of a pistol powder??? Say for 357/38 ??? I thought someone told me once that its more of a slow magnum powder. Any help would be apprieciated

Happy Shooting,
Redrider.

I tried it in around 39 different combinations from 7mm to .375. It worked, but was not my "preferred powder" in anything.

Thanks Steve, but maybe I should ask the question a litte differently. What other powder is similar to H-205. I generally use IMR4198, 4895, 4350 and 4831 in all my rifles. How does H-205 fall into this mix? H-205 is discontinued isn't it???? I could find 256 Newton info on your site which is rare, but I can't find anything on H-205.

redrider,

Ken Waters' book Pet Loads lists quite a few loads using H205. Looking at it's use with the 30-06, it seems very close in burn rate with N204. Mr. Waters book also lists the .256 Newton with different 120, 125, 129, and 140grn bullets but does not list H205 in the one page of data for it. Mostly IMR 3031, 4895, 4350, 4831 powders with 4064, RL-12, W760, H4350 and 4831, and 7828 thrown in. BM
