The brass that came with the purchase of my 8mm-06 Mauser rifle is Lake City 30-06 which has been expanded to 8mm and then neck sized. Since this brass has been shot a number of times (no record)I'm going to replace them with new 30-06 Win brass. My problem is I only have the RCBS dies, full length sizer and seater, that came with the rifle which does not have a tapered expander button. Can I run this 06 brass into a die without a tapered button and expand the neck OK or must I get it expanded first? I have access to an 338 expander mandrel and I think I could expande the brass to 338 and then size it in the RCBS 8mm-06 full length sizer and be all set. All advise and suggestions wil be appreciated.

Just run the 30-06 brass thru the 8MM -06 die....it'll work fine.

VD is right, but the brass you got with it is probably just fine for range work. Years back I made up a lot of 8mm-06 brass and never paid attention to where it came from or who made it or how many times it was loaded. Didn't know if this was a BAD thing or not. Some of that ammo is still being used in Alaska after 38 years or so. Two years ago we dispatched 2 Halibut that were too big to bring into the boat alive with it and it's original Fred Barnes' bullet. roger

I resize from 30-06 up to 338-06 with no problems on a "standard" die. Beings that the 8mm is smaller than the 338, I can't see you having a problem.

Lube them up real good, run them through your sizer, and load 'em.

Don't lube them up too good or you will have dimples in the shoulder, I use Dillons lube and let it dry 5 min before sizing.

I'd use RCBS slick 'em, if dead primers are already out. then you can rinse them out/off with real hot water and let dry. Should be fine.

Might be worth contacting them to see if they have a tapered button. I'll bet they'd sent it n/c IF they have them. While you're at it, request a pkg of pins. Have your die handy to provide the numbers off the top.

Good point, and I maybe should've mentioned that.

But I was mainly concerned with inside of the necks, as that's where the "friction" will be when expanding them for the first time.

Whenever I neck up I spray the cases gnerously with Lymans spray lube and then neck up only.

I then wash the cases in gasoline or Acetone and dry them and then lube normally and FL resize them.

This helps avoid the dented necks from excessive lube.

Not everyone likes the Lyman spray......but it's served me well so far.
