I am getting ~2740 fps out of my 24" barrel using the 225 grain Hornadys over 62 grains H4350. I also get very good results using the 200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip over 61 1/2 grains of IMR 4350. In my rifle this load give great accuracy @ 2800+ fps muzzle velocity.

Quote: I found in my rifle I was gettting signs of excessive pressure long before I got the desired velocities using both RL15 and IMR4064 under the 200 - 250 grain bullets. Using the 175 grain X bullet though was another story all together! LoL I was able to develope a supper-accurate load using the IMR4064 that had a muzzle velocity of 3000+ fps

I have been shooting my .338-06 for many years now & have settled on the exc. 210grNP for an all purpose, deer to elk load, only ever recovered one of these bullets. IMR4320 & RL15 give me 2700fps+ w/ good accuracy. Mine is very picky, but I suspect the bbl. on this one. For a shorter woods range hammer, I like any of the 250gr bullets over H4350 or RL19 for 2450fps form my 22 1/2"bbl. A great cart. for hunting all of NA & most of the rest of the worlds game.

Not often seen listed, but I think for the 250 grain bullet in the Hornady or Sierra Manual, is H 380. I have found it to give the most velocity and most accuracy combo of any powder tried. My other loads are 50 grains of IMR 4064. With any weight of bullet, velocity is 2500 fps. So same point of impact with 200 or 250 grains. I also use 35 grains of SR 4759 with a 200 grain bullet to duplicate the old 33 Winchester. I even load it with the 200 grain FN hornady bullet that unfortuneately has been discontinued. But the same load with a 200 or 180 grain Ballistic Tips works nice for a reduced recoil load. Velocity is at 2250 fps. Recoil reduction is about 60%! Cheers and Happy holidays seafire

Donato, Have you tried AA 4064? I have an 8 pound can of that. It should be similar to IMR. Maybe I'll try some light loads with it and work up since I need to use this AA stuff up. Thanks everyone for your help, burleyboy

Burleyboy, I've been shooting my 22 inch barereled 338/06 since 92 with great results. Mine is a rebarreled Ruger M77. I've settled on IMR 4064 powder and 200gr Barnes X bullets. My load is 58 IMR 4064 = 2,840. Work this load up from 55 gr or so. With this load I've killed nine of the large african antelope and two elk. I've also used this powder with 180 and 200gr Nosler BT's, 200 and 225 gr Hornadays and 210 gr Nosler's. All these bullets shot under an inch, so I never looked for a better powder. I've also used IMR 4320 with the same results. Shot a moose with the 210 gr noslers and a few deer with 200 gr Hornadys but the 200 X is my bullet of Choice. Try IMR 4064 you will love it.

Do a search for past posts on the 338-06.Lots of info here. Great cartridge, enjoy. My rifle shoots anything but 4320. IMR 4064 seems to work with all bullet weights. The 200 gr Ballistic Tip and 4064 shot like a varmint rifle, but I load for elk. My best loads by rank. 1. 210 Nosler, 55.6 gr. Varget, BR-2..2780 fps 2. 225 Horady SP 53.8 gr. IMR-4064, BR-2...2670 fps 3. 250 Sierra, NP, or Hornady,(They all shoot) 59.5 H-4350, CCI 250..2550 fps. all are near max loads

I use 4064 in mine. It tends to like heavier charges. (There was a post a while back where I mentioned that accuracy improved as the load went up in mine...). It gets 2700+ FPS easily without using ridiculous charges. The Nosler 210 Partition is just about *perfect* for the 338-06!
