I HAVE A .260 REM. SHOOT 120 HAND LOADS AT ABOUT 2940 FPS. DOWN HERE IN S.C. I SHOOT ABOUT 130 TO 180 LB. DEER AT SAY 200 TO 300 YARDS, AND IT DOES A GREAT JOB. MY BUDDYS THINK THEY NEED A 30-06 OR 270 TO DO THE SAME THING. YOU FELLOWS THAT HUNT THE MID WEST. MY QUESTON IS WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DEER SIZE GAME YA'LL HAVE TAKEN WITH YOUR 260?

I can't answer your 260 question, but out west I can tell you that the larger 30's are the be all & end all in elk and bear country. Sure you'll find a few 270's & 7's, and even the occasional 264 Winchester, but those that don't normally pack a 30-06 or 300 magnum, pack a 338. The later rounds are especially appreciated where shots are far and few between, sometimes long, and seldom broadside. Bone smashing power is where it's at, and in .264" diameter that means 140 grain bullets or heavier.

Antelope & deer ar about as big as I would push my 260ai. When elk are on the menu, I like bigger bullets.

I used a 25-06 on a deer hunt in WV. And never felt out guned, and also have a 6.5x55 and would not hesitate to take any sized deer out to 200y.

For elk I would go with my 280 with a 160 NP. popcorn

Well Scandanavians don't feel the 6.5 bore is any too small for moose up there way, which is the same thing as your 260, just in a different case....

I myself wouldn't feel undergunned with a 260 and a decent 140 grain bullet...

I've hunted elk with a 125 grain partition in my 260... 'ceptin the damn elk didn't cooperate!! But if they had, I have no qualms it would have done the job.. I have seen others take elk with that combo here in Oregon...

we 260 guys and we 338/06 guys kinda flock together it seems when we run across each other out in the game fields.....we always seem to be the odd man out....but we know they work..

Well, I haven't had much time for the 260 and large deer yet, but I have a 245# buck with the 6.5-06AI and a single well placed 120 Nosler BT. I also have a 200# doe with the 264WM and a 125 Partition. I see no problem with the 260 and doing the same things.

As I believe in weight of bullet I don't think there would be a whole lot of difference between the 140 bullet in a 260 and the 140 in a 7-08. I know the 7-08 with a 140 is very sudden on mulies and the two WTs I've shot with a 260 and 140s were plenty dead. I think either one would be all the rifle one would need east of the big river, and if elk weren't in the mix, they'd do you a good job on the west side also. As I have other rifles better suited to the task, neither one would be my choice as an elk rifle.

The largest game I have taken with the .260 Rem has been Axis does. The 140 grain bullet out of the .260 smashes them down as well as the 140 out of a 7mm-08. It is not an Elk rifle in my opinion, but it sure will take any deer type critter up to the Elk.

This one was taken with a single shot from a 6.5 X 55 (same thing as the .260 Rem almost) using a 120 Grain Northfork. Weight was estimated at about 180 pounds dressed.

The .260 class of cartridges are unquestionably excellent for deer size animals.....

I'd use mine for elk as well but I have a .30-06 that would get the nod first.

I've shot several 180+ lbs deer with my .260 and a Sierra 120 gr Prohunter over RE 19. Only problem I have is prying that rifle out of my son's hands......
