Hello all.. I just got back from the range with some results from my new toy. I bought a Savage 12BVSS and topped it with a Nikon 4.5x14 Buckmaster. Anyway, I finally worked up a few loads when time allowed. Here are my results:

39Gr Varget
50Gr Sierra Spitzer SP
CCI 200 LR Primer
3 Shot Group .775" Lower Bullseye
------------------------------------------------------------

Same as above with Winchester LR Primer .55" Top of Bullseye..
------------------------------------------------------------
39Gr Varget
40gr VMAX Moly
CCI 200LR Primer
3 shot group 2.27" 3"low and 3"left of Bullseye.
------------------------------------------------------------
Same as above with 50gr Speer TNT and CCI Primers..
------------------------------------------------------------
The 50gr Sierra shot lovely with either primer, I had no Chrony with me. However the WLR Primers seemed to shoot better groups. Can anyone explain why the 40gr VMAX's and 50gr TNT's were so low and left?? I can say it was not Operator Error as I have a Versapod Bipod and Sandbags. Seems like a big difference. Does anyone think I need to back the charge off on the VMAX's? I picked up some IMR 4895 so will try some loads with it. Any advice would be helpful. I have simply fallen in love with this Savage so far. I can only see things getting better. Thanks in advance.

I recently worked up loads and had similar results. My groups with the 40 grain bullets were much tighter than yours, but thr point of impact was way off the 55 grain loads. I used several powders and charges, but the results were always the same. The point of impact of the 40 grain loads were so different than the 55's I could not begin to use them together. If the 55 grain loads were in the bull, the 40's were three inches high and one inch left!I had to choose one and sight in for it and forget the other.

I have a savage model 10 with a 22'' barrel.I found that imr 4064 at 37gr and a 50gr vmax gave me .5 at a 100 yards.Good luck.

S.D. Man,

Can I make a suggestion? Shoot five shot groups, and shoot more than one group with each load. One off 3 shot groups are not very reliable, statistaclly speaking...

Why don't you try the Hodgdon classic? Use a 55 grain bullet with 38 grains of H-380. Better use a Winchester primer-- H-380 needs a hot one. H-380 was named after this load and it was Bob Milek's favorite. I have a cousin-in-law that shoots it in a Savage and it groups in the 0.3s. Best to work up slowly and carefully monitor for pressure signs, but typically this is a good one in most .22-250s.
