Jim, Personally I use a single stage RCBS RS5 for all of my target and hunting loads where I feel accuracy is the top priority. Most of the task(s) in reloading are really a labor of love so I don't mind most of the required actions. I recently acquired a Hornady Lock-n-Load progressive model press from a buddy CHEAP! I have always wanted a progressive press since I began reloading 15 yrs ago. This press is probably not as good a press as the Dillion but it works extremely well and loads quality handloads. I use it mostly for pistol (personal defense/practice) and occasionally for rifle ammo for friends/buddies who aren't as concerned with accuracy as I am. The only rifle ammo that I have loaded with it has been .270 Win. This ammo was for a cousin's husbands deer rifle. I checked the case-activated powder measure's throw every 3rd load for about 25 rounds against a RCBS 5-0-5 scale and all were very close once adjustments were complete. Rhythm has a lot to do with the consistency. He (cousin's hubby) was very pleased with the accuracy and just went on and on about how accurate the loads were! I tried several for groups prior to delivery and they shot in the .75" range (more than acceptable to "deer minute of angle"). Progressive's usually take a few minutes to set-up but are fun once you're there. It brings out the "tinkerer" in most of us. Hope this post helps with your decision and good luck with your purchase. Jim: Have you considered a turret press? A turret press such as a Lyman T-Mag II is much like a single stage press, except that the turret hold 5 dies. The turret, however, does not work like a progressive press would, since one has to turn it by hand from one die to the next. The T-Mag II I use is a good press, but Reddin's T-7 is the sturdiest press I have ever seen. If I ever decide to buy another press, it will be a T-7.

I use a RCBS to resize and then use the dillon for the rest of the process. Some very high quality ammo can be turned out using the dillon press. Reloading presses are like Rifles. Who wants to have only one?

I'm not really going to answer your question. But I will say that I have a turret that I always use as a single-stage. I really, really enjoy reloading. I don't sling hundreds of rounds downrange a week, so I can afford the time to put ont some nice music, relax and make some cartridges. The 45 ACP sometimes I do at least think of loading in turret mode, since I can lose a couple hundred very quickly, but even them so far have been "microbrewed." I guess I just like it. Ask me again in ten years.
