I've only used bullets from the big makers, but I had good luck with 168-gr. Match Kings. Sierra's 155-gr. Palma is also a standout.

Is there a special reason you want a FMJ bullet?
For pure accuracy a Sierra Matchking is the way to go.
For hunting however a Sierra Gameking, or a Nosler Ballistic Tip will be just about as accurate, but much better for hunting.

If you are using the FMJ for some special type of hunting you might try to find some Barnes Solids. In 30 cal they are pointed in the lighter weights and round nose in the heavier weights.
Also you could load the Nosler Ballistic Tip backwards [it has a solid base] for close range [100 yards or so] hunting.

Hey Sako, I've used a good many Win and Rem over the years, but last year I was "given" 1000 - 150gr FMJ FN-FAL bullets.

When I initially looked at them, it was easy to see how well made they are in comparison to the Win and Rems. I weighed about 25(I think) and they were all + or - 0.2gr.

Loaded some for two separate rifles and they shot REALLY well. Not BenchRest Accuracy, but just great for getting some Trigger Time and practicing off the Bench.

This buddy tried to order something else from http://www.wideners.com and just entered the wrong Part Number. He could have sent them back, but just gave them to me.

If you decide to try them, just order a small quantity at first to see if they shoot well in your rifles.

Best of luck to you.

In my CZ, Sierra 168 gr MatchKings and the Nosler 168 gr Competition print the same with the same almost one hole accuracy.

Sierras come in 100 or 500 to a box
Noslers come 100 or 250 to a box.

100 is not enough but 500 is too many so I use Nosler.

Back to the still.

You're one up on me.....I've never had an accurate FMJ.....even in 22 cal. I've used matchkings and the like for anything one would use a FMJ for.

Hey Vapodog, I should have said, "Shot really well for a FMJ". They are not MatchKings or B-Tips when it comes to pure accuracy.

I like to get a lot of Off-Hand shooting done throughout the year. My old tired muscles just need a bunch of practice. For plinking at Soda cans, the FMJs are a nice "cost reduction" to the ammo, especially the FREE ones. Big Grin

Just thinking about it, I'm sure I didn't even do any Fine Tuning of the Seating Depth. Just Seated them so the Crimping Groove was in-line with the Case-mouth and tried 3-4 loads with IMR-4064. Huuummm, as I wham this in, I realize that is WAY out of norm for my usual reloading routine.

I would say for the casual shooter who goes to the Range less than say 12 times a year, it probably isn't that big a deal to just stick with his regular hunting bullets.

Well the reason for FMJ bullets is that im hunting few small animals for a local taxidemist and shoot greylag gooses for practise plus it has become an opsession of mine to get some FMJ to shoot real well!

I could ofcorse hunt with a shotgun for the taxidermist but hey isint that giving up??

Might give the Barnes a try but they are a bit expensive!

What about the Early Model Sierra MKs? I just traded 3 boxes (180s) to STP. They were FMJs back then.

They shot just like the newer HPBT models for me. Probably going to be quite hard to find now-a-days.

Good Luck

I`ve only used two different FMJ:s in my .308:s.
110 grs Sierra and 147 grs Sellier Bellot. After i have found a charge of a certain powder that gives accuracy, I havent still been able to use the full potential DURING HUNTS.
But the simple fact of knowing that it is up to me, whether the shot will be good or bad, makes me a better hunter/shooter. I want to be able to trust my gear not to fail me.
To get to the point, I think, if You reload you will be able to find hunting accuracy with most bullets.

I agree that the 168 gr. Matchkings are the most accurate bullet for my 700VS.

A bud and I went in halves on Ebay and bought 1000 168 gr. FMJBT bullets for plinking. They are the type bullet with the lead core showing at the heel. Suprisingly, these bullets shoot great! Not as well as the MKs., but a lot better than some name brand bullets. You may be able to find the same bullets in a smaller lot on Ebay.

Hey Reloader, I don't believe I've shot any FMJ Sierra bullets. Are they shooting well for you?

Looks like LeeOtis and his buddy are happy with the ones they got too.

I like Sierra's 168 grain MK too. I've had good luck with it in the M1, M1A, and all my -06 bolt guns. I used that bullet with IMR 4895, 4064, 4350, and V-V N-160 -all could be made to shoot well with minimal work on my part. In fact, if those bullet/load combos couldn't be fine tuned, something else was wrong with the gun.

Hot Core, I bought over 300 awhile back and they shot pretty darn good in my 300 Win, about 1/2" at 100. They shot pretty much the same as the HPBT versions.

I just traded the 180s w/ STP. He told me that the FMJ MKs hadn't been made since back in the 70s.

Pretty good Bullets. The thing about some of the HPBTs is that the tips aren't all the same. W/ those FMJ MKs the tips were the same and the weights were consistant as well. That'll probably lead to more consistency in BCs.
