Good morning everyone. I know you folks have been over this subject before, but I'm new and find it a little difficult to find my way around yet. So I'll ask the question again, where can I find loads developed for this caliber. I'm thinking of using the barnes (coated) x bullet in 150gr. Any help will be appreciated.

After considerable trial and error I found Retumbo to give the best accuracy and velocity in my 7Ultra. I don't have any experience with Barnes bullets in the 7 Ultra but have not been able to get them to shoot well in any of my other rifles. Good luck. If the Barnes doesn't work out for you try the 160 Nosler Accubond. Retumbo pushes it at 3400 out of my rifle with super accuracy.

I was not a fan of the 7mm RUM until I got this email. I have edited it to keep the sender anonomous.

"This is my "big gun" I`m a 7mm guy and personally have 5 reamers of my own incuding this one. This is a Remington 700 action Krieger Sendero taper 1 in 10" twist crowned at 26". It has a McMillan Classic stock with sendero barrel channel, Jewell trigger, Leupold LRT 6.5-20x50. I took it antelope hunting this fall in NE New Mexico and was able to harvest my furthest shot of 530 yds. My son also used it and took his buck at 306 yds. I have several others but this is my long range favorite. It is pushing the new Nosler 140 Accubond at 3605 with exceptional accuracy, I put 4 of 5 shots in the .2`s before the hunt, 88.5 gr IMR 7828."

The above chamber is a 7mm.338 RUM. Don't just use any data. This is one of the problems I have with cartridges that don't have a lot of published data. Even the 264 WM could use updated data.

Thanks fellas, I got the rifle last year and haven't been able to set up my reloading equipment yet, (just moved). Its a Sako 75 Hunter, it was bore sighted when I got it and the first shot with it was a half inch right at 100yds. this was with factory loads rem. premier 160 gr nosler par.I sited it in for 300yds, and got a group 2 1/2 ". There is room for improvment. I must admit though it has been hard to find info. for it.

Shelby,

I've been using the Barnes 140g X-bullet with 95g's of Retumbo in my 7mm RUM. In my rifle (Rem 700) I chronographed this at 3500 fps. I've never had much luck with the Barnes bullets, but this rifle seems to like them. I shot two big whitetails, at just under 100 yards each with this load, and they dropped in their tracks. Complete bullet pass through.- I did find a single petal from one of the bullets in one of the far shoulders on one of the deer. Eventually, I am going to try some of the newer Barnes bullets to see if there is any room for improvement? But for right now, Hodgdon's RETUMBO seems to be the shining star.

As much as I have come to like the 7 Ultra be careful what bullet you choose. This thing can run bullets fast enough to make varmint bullets out of some of them at close range. I took a good size Mule Deer with the 150 CT Ballistic Tip at 358 yards and it worked fine but the lack of complete penetration and weight loss suggested that this bullet might not have held together had the animal been close it.

With both the .264 Win and the 7mm STW, I've had the best luck with surplus WC 872. This powder is cheap, but its performance in large-for-bore cases is excellent. It should work equally well in the 7mm RUM.

If you have a chronograph and are confident of your experience in reading pressures, you should be able to work up an excellent load with this powder. H870 data is recommended as a starting place, but the lots of WC 872 I have worked with are significantly slower than H870, so you can at least start with H870 "maximums".

My hunting partner back home has a sako hunter 75 in the 7mm STW, he uses barnes 140 gr X bullets all the time and swears by them. He's cronyed them at 3400fps, I'm not sure what powder he uses though. He has had good results though taking a very nice 5x5 elk two seasons ago. Does anyone have any expreince with the new barnes XLC. The coaing is supposed to help keep your barrel from over heating, and reduce pressure and fouling.

Thanks Snider 700. I think its an excellnet cal. also. I took a nice bull moose this fall with the factory 160gr nosler partians. I shot it at 503yds up a hill. We under estimated the range we guessed it to be about 400yds. If it weren't for the flat shooting abiltiy of this gun he would have got away.
