G'day Gents,
I am looking for consensus on a load for a .470 NitroExpress for a Double Rifle.
I have brass casings, 500grain projectiles and dies and need to find a competent reloader,I am in Brisbane, Australia.
I have Read Graeme Wright.

Thanks in Advance.

There really isn’t a “consensus” good load.

If this is a double, you need to shoot it to insure it regulates. The manuals will give data to stay in a good pressure range, but it’s just a matter of bullet choice (some just won’t work with an individual rifle) and making sure it stays in regulation.

Doubles can be very picky on what works (or very easy, depends on that individual rifle)…

Loading for a double rifle is quite unlike loading for a “normal” rifle.
One can suggest a starting point, but it needs to be tailored to regulate for your rifle.

Who made your rifle and when?

Key questions that, with proper research, will help you find a decent starting place.

More than likely you start with Woodleigh soft and solids, then Grames suggested powder combos of H4831, IMR4350, or RL-15 firing 2x2 4 shot groups until both barrels cross, and this usually works 75% of the time. BUT One thing is you must set a accuracy goal as the double rifle shoots only as good as the WORST barrel, so thats your starting point by shooting a 4 shot group with each barrel several times is best to know how the worst barrels groups, then sight it in as above with both barrels shooting a group to the same spot dead center and the size of the worst barrel at the 70 yard target.

The last time I printed this it went septic with idiots posts who could not grasp a simple fact of life! homer

If you are in Brisbane pop down to Belmont and meet some great people at the BGRC. They will help you no end, including Graeme Wright.

How is the rifle going?

Email me if I can assist.

AR2209 and Re15 gave me regulating loads.

I once asked Oliver Barton a Tanzania PH if the ammo in his leather wallet all shot to the same point of Impact at 70 yards as his wallet carried some Federal softs and solids loads and two other mixed brands of ammo from the UK.

He smiled between bites of a sandwich and said "frankly I'm not sure but they do shoot well enough at 5 yards and that's all that counts"

I chuckled and reached for another sausage!

Find "The Double Rifle Bullet Of The Future" thread here on AR. Read that thread. 106 Grs of IMR 4831 is hard to beat.
