On the Powder Valley Inc. site they have a "new" powder, Accurate 85, for 69.00 for 8# plus the added $20. Any one tried this powder? Can this powder be used in a 204? Thanks, BA

Well, I got a chance to test some DP 85 this weekend. I loaded 300WSM 165gr, 30-06 165gr, 7MM-06 160gr and 6.5x55 140gr. The weather was cold (-4) and windy. I can't really comment on DP 85's accuracy too much. I was a bit off my game with the cold and wind.

I found that DP 85 is slower than Hunter.

In my 300WSM grain for grain Hunter has about 85 to 90fps more. Max load in this gun has DP 85 2.5 grains more than Hunter's max with velocities still a bit slower.

The difference in velocity in my 06 was much closer. Grain for grain Hunter averaged only about 30fps more. I didn't have a chance to check for high pressure.

In the 7MM-08 Hunter averaged 65fps more. Max pressure for this rifle had DP 85 1.7gr higher than Hunter.


In my 6.5x55 CZ I didn't test any Hunter. Ramshot data for Hunter/140gr is 43gr. I went all the way to 46.5 of DP 85 with no signs of pressure. 46gr of DP 85 produced avg velocity of 2699fps.

Like I said not much of a report. Accuracy is the most important thing and I really can't comment on that much. I can say that it didn't shoot any worse the anything else I tried.

Anyone have an update for this post. I have also been looking at this powder, since it is about 1/3 less than other comparable powders. It seems to have a broad base of uses, from 22:250 .243 25:06 .270 7mag. 30:06 .300 mag. etc. How dense is it compared to H450 or win. 785. Where does the burn rate fit in?? Any comment??

I am using it in .270 .243 .243 AI great velocity and good accuracy

Just for shits and giggles in a .223, I loaded 28gr.of DP85 lightly compressed, behind a 62 gr. law enforcement bullet, a CCI Mag. primer, case LC 04, oal= 2.285.

Results: Mild, sooty, 2838 to 2916 FPS.3 shot 3/4" group at 100 yds. No evidence of residue other than soot, but I doubt if all the powder burned. roger

.243 WSSM, 87gr.V Max., WLRM, DP 85, 42, 42.5,43, 43.5, 44, 44.5. Group variance with load change was obvious.Group went from just below MOA to .3" and up to just under MOA again at 100 yds.

Win. Mod. 70, Stealth II. All charges were weighed. roger

FYI. DP 85 22-250, Bull barrel, very little wind, 100yds. 55gr FBHP Berger, Everything the same except powder charge. Started at 39grains dp85 and went to 42 grains dp85 in 1/2 grain increments. Velocity went from 3400 fps to someting over 3700 fps. The largest group was .8" (42gr.) and the smallest 3 shot group was under .4". I chronographed all 7 loads one after the other, hot barrel. The 7 shots of different powder charges was an easy 1/2" group. The 42 gr. loading showed little or no over pressure. Three of three 22-250s performs just super with it.

The DP 85 can still be had for$69.00/8# One source is Powder Valley. I just received another 48# Thur. Soon it will be gone as is all the rest of the surplus powders. roger
